City officials paid tribute to former Mayor James W. Holley III on the front steps of City Hall on Tuesday evening, recalling him as a man who dedicated himself to promoting his city and improving the lives of its residents.

The year was 1996, and James W. Holley III was launching a campaign to become mayor after losing the seat years before. He sent a supporter to talk to Rev. Joe Fleming, pastor of the Third Baptist Church, with a simple message.

GREENSBORO, Ga. The last surviving Navy doctor who landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy during the D-Day invasion of World War II has died, according to a funeral director and a researcher. Dr. Joseph Lee Parker Jr., of Greensboro, Ga., died Sept. 27 at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro. He was 95.

NEW YORK Former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, who led the newspaper to new levels of influence and profit while standing up for press freedom and editorial independence during some of the most significant moments in 20th-century journalism, died Saturday. He was 86.

RICHMOND Retired Virginia Supreme Court Justice Henry H. Whiting has died at the age of 89. Whiting served on the Supreme Court of Virginia from 1987 to 2002 and took senior status in 1995. He retired in 2002. In a statement on Monday, Gov. Bob McDonnell said Virginia lost an "esteemed jurist, veteran barrister and public servant."

WASHINGTON The first man to walk on the moon has been buried at sea. NASA says Neil Armstrong's cremated remains were buried in the Atlantic Ocean on Friday during a ceremony aboard the USS Philippine Sea. Armstrong was a Navy fighter pilot before joining the space program. He died last month in Ohio at age 82. His burial follows a memorial service in Washington on Thursday.

SUFFOLK The Rev. J. Rayfield Vines, who led sit-ins at segregated Suffolk drug counters in the 1960s and went on to become head of the Virginia NAACP, has died at the age of 75.

Calvin Zedd was often called a colorful character.
He wore checkered shirts and plaid pants. He had an elephant painted on the side of his old, well-known Norfolk establishment - Zedd Auctioneers - because he always wanted to own a circus. He had himself painted atop the elephant.

LOS ANGELES Phyllis Diller, the housewife turned humorist who aimed some of her sharpest barbs at herself, punctuating her jokes with her trademark cackle, died Monday morning in her Los Angeles home at age 95. "She died peacefully in her sleep and with a smile on her face," her longtime manager, Milton Suchin, told The Associated Press.
