Hurricane Sandy expected to douse Oyster Bowl

Last year's Oyster Bowl was played in a cold, driving rain, and it looks like this year's might as well.

Hurricane Sandy is bearing down on Hampton Roads and The Weather Channel is predicting as much as six inches of rain and swirling winds over the next few days. As a precaution, Old Dominion University officials said they won't allow tailgating after tomorrow's noon game with Delaware.

You can tailgate prior to the game, beginning at 8 a.m., but ODU officials said they want all tents, grills and other stuff packed up by gametime.

ODU defeated James Madison 23-20 last year in the Oyster Bowl on the strength of a fourth-quarter Jarod Brown field goal. Tomorrow's game with Delaware is also designated as the Oyster Bowl.

Don't look for the usual festivities on Kaufman Mall. They have been moved indoors in the Webb Student Center

Here's a statement issued by ODU, courtesy of Eric Bohannon of the sports information office:

Old Dominion University will host the University of Delaware on campus on Saturday, Oct. 27 at noon at Foreman Field at SB Ballard Stadium. Tailgate lots will open at 8 a.m., however fans are asked to dismantle tents and pack up their belongings at their tailgate space at kickoff, as post-game tailgating will not be permitted due to Hurricane Sandy storm preparations on campus. Pre-game activities on Kaufman Mall have been relocated to Webb Center on campus.
