The Federal Government has the power to remove asylum seekers if they don't invoke their rights under the Refugee Convention when they're interviewed by Immigration Department officials. The Government has revealed it's returned 26 men to Sri Lanka on those grounds. A former commonwealth ombudsman Allan Asher says the government may have breached its Refugee Convention obligations.

The Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation is in administration, leaving hundreds of employees fearing for their future and community pride shattered. In the past, the BAC won national recognition for services to outstations, employment for indigenous rangers and support for highly successful indigenous artists. But in less than three years the BAC has gone from a strong financial position to what's believed to be millions of dollars in debt.

The group is now facing a new threat from rival Virgin's push into both the business and leisure travel markets. Earlier this year, the government moved to protect smokers from their addiction, with the introduction of plain packaging for cigarettes. And every other week there are stories in the media about the apparent rise of one addiction or the other be it internet, smartphones, food, sugar, or even sex. But are Australia's policy settings around addiction doing the job?
To discuss this, The World Today spoke to Dr Nicole Lee, an Associate Professor at the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) at Flinders University,

Election officials in America's north-east are scrambling to make adjustments to voting plans because of damage from superstorm Sandy. It's unclear if power will still be out, but plans are being made to bring in generators or to move voting locations. With the race to the White House now in its concluding days, president Barack Obama and his challenger Mitt Romney are back on the campaign trail, making their closing pitches.
