So what did the first day of winter look like around Australia?
For a land that is as diverse as it is large, the beginning of winter is dramatically different from one region to the next.
The northern region heralds the beginning of the dry season while further south, the cooler temperatures start to set in.
The beginning of winter can spark a change in behaviours too, with city dwellers having a hot coffee to start their day while those in the regions start to see birds that haven't seen for a while.
ABC Local online reporters from around the nation have set out with camera in hand to photograph an image of what the first day of June can look like in their respective region.
Highlights include the bright sun reflecting off the bay in the top end, an optimistic pelican in Adelaide, tough Tasmanians rugging up in the cold morning and the illuminated Thomson River flowing through outback Queensland as the sun rises.
