LIBERTYVILLE — Lego lover Noah Valencia was able to use his Lego skills to win the grand prize in a fire prevention poster contest sponsored by the Libertyville Fire Department.
Noah is an Adler Park School third-grade student. While his entire class entered the contest, he made a three-dimensional poster building a home and using Lego pieces to design a scene of firefighters putting the house’s fire out.
He attached red pipe cleaners to the Lego house to indicate flames.
“I felt happy when I won the trophy,” the eight-year-old said.
He won a trophy and ribbon for his creativity, and was invited to show his work off to the Libertyville Elementary District 70 Board of Education.
Noah labored over his poster for two days. He built the house of wood and used Lego pieces for details like firefighters and shrubbery around the house.
Witnessing an actual fire inspired him to create his poster.
“I saw a house when it was on fire. I saw lightning hit a house and (ignite) a fire,” Noah said.
The Libertyville Fire Department sponsors the poster contest every year as part of fire prevention week, according to Assistant Fire Chief Ken Komers.
Students at area schools are invited to make posters. At least 100 participate, he estimated. A winner is selected for each grade and then one overall grand prize winner is selected.
The poster theme changes yearly. This year’s theme was “Know Two Ways Out.”
“You need to know two ways out in case of fire,” Komers said. “It gets (kids) thinking about fire safety ... it’s a program that has worked. It’s a great program.”
This poster contest was the first that Noah has won.
He said he likes to build spaceships, houses and monsters with his Legos. He also likes painting and bike riding, and his favorite subject in school is reading.
