Start-ups can hold the potential to offer innovative or new solutions to existing problems in a field. Therefore, we asked our experts to recommend start-up nonprofits working in their cause. We were interested in organizations that have already had an impact or that have high potential to have an impact in the future. Often, these organizations are just a few years old. How did we get these recommendations?

1 2009 WaterLegacy
Water Legacy is a grassroots citizens’ group, with leadership in Northern Minnesota and in the Twin Cities area, formed in response to the threat of the first sulfide mine proposed in the State of Minnesota. Their goals are 1) to protect and enhance Minnesota's precious freshwater resources and 2) to ensure effective public participation in government and regulatory processes that impact the quality of fresh water and the health of communities dependent on that water.
2 2008 BikeMN (The Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota)
To provide leadership and a unified voice for bicycle education, advocacy and efforts to make Minnesota more bicycle friendly so that more people will ride bicycles more often.
3 2009 Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance
We are dedicated to slowing and reversing the current trend of sediment and nutrient flow to Lake Pepin.  We bring a professional approach for public involvement in present and future watershed restoration activities that elevate the importance of implementation of the recommendations and "best practices" that science and reason dictate. Leading with the tools of education and information we will protect the natural heritage of Lake Pepin.
4 2008 St Croix River Association
The mission of St. Croix River Association is to protect, restore and celebrate the St. Croix River and its watershed.
5 2009 EJAM (Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota)
EJAM works in collaboration with communities to create equitable, healthful and sustainable futures for all generations.
6 2010 Grand Aspirations
Grand Aspirations empowers, connects, and supports youth leaders as they create innovative, self-sustaining, and interdependent initiatives that integrate climate and energy solutions, economic security, and social justice.
7 2009 Anglers for Habitat
Anglers for Habitat is dedicated to the preservation and improvement of aquatic habitat, clean water and fishing in Minnesota.
8 2008 Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy (CEED)
The Center was developed through conversations with community activists who saw the need for policy research and education on energy and community development issues, with an inclusion of social justice and equity. The Center works at the intersection of energy, environment and community development, promoting solutions that are democratic, sustainable and socially just.
9 2008 Preventing Harm Minnesota
Preventing Harm Minnesota seeks to improve the health of children in Minnesota by promoting greater precaution in the policies and personal choices that determine routine pollutants in a child’s environment.
