Did You Know...?
The moon is Earth's only known natural satellite, and is the fifth largest satellite in the solar system. It is a quarter the diameter of Earth but only 1/81 of its mass.

  • Optical Design: Refractor
  • Aperture: 60mm
  • Focal Length:700mm
  • Eyepiece 1: 20mm (35x magnification)
  • Eyepiece 2: 12.5mm (56x magnification)
  • Mount: Alt-Azimuth
  • Weight: 2.2 kg
  • Finderscope: Cross-hair finderscope
  • Star Diagonal: erecting diagonal
  • Highest useful magnification: 168x
  • Limiting stellar magnitude: 11.16
  • TELESCOPES, What do all the features mean?
  • Refractor: Bends the light to your eye using lenses.
  • Reflector: Reflects the light to your eye using mirrors.
  • Catadioptric: Use a combination of mirrors and lenses to get the light to your eye e.g. Maksutov-Cassegrain and Schmidt-Cassegrain.
  • Alt-azimuth mount: A simple mount that allows movement in altitude (up and down) and in azimuth (side to side).
  • Focal Length: The higher the focal length, the higher the magnification.
  • Eyepiece: A small tube that contains the lenses needed to focus the image from the telescope to the eye. The size of the eyepiece affects the magnification. High number = lower magnification. Low number = higher magnification.
  • Magnification: A calculation of the focal length of the telescope ÷ the eyepiece. E.g. Focal length of 130EQ is 650mm with a 10mm eyepiece the magnification is 65x.
  • Aperture: The size of the main lens or mirror that collects light in your telescope. Usually the first number in the description of the telescope.
  • Barlow Lens: When placed in front of the normal eyepiece, it increases the magnification of the normal eyepiece.
  • Diagonal Eyepiece: A mirror or prism system that changes that changes the angle and orientation of the light rays coming from the telescope to the eyepiece.
  • Erecting Eyepiece: Flips the image coming from the telescope to right side up and will appear to the viewer as a mirror image.
  • Finderscope: A low power (or zero power) scope attached parallel to the main telescope, which provides easy telescope aiming and object locating.

This is the perfect gift for getting someone who is new to astronomy started .It provides good eyepieces and finder scope. Haven't used the Barlow yet, should try it sometime. This, combined with a good book, is the perfect package.

The 60x700 AZ Starter Scope. A well accepted telescope particularly for the younger generation, simple to set up and simple to use. There are several good add ons, such as books on astronomy especially Astronomy 2012. The price is affordable and the quality is good. George AG Warringah Mall, NSW
