The first step

After 7 years in a training role in a large mental health trust, I have now stepped back into a clinical role.  The role is as a primary care nurse, helping to move clients from secondary care services like Community Mental Health Teams into GP care.  Of course they move themselves and I hope to oil their wheels and take the bugs off their windshields.  I had an introduction to Acceptance Commitment Therapy via an introductory day plus extensive reading related to its use in building resilience in the workforce.  From my vantage point, its exciting and full of poten

THE UGLY DOLL

Dear Santa: this is just to say
That I don´t like the doll you left.
She is cross-eyed, her hair a mess
It seems to me sort of rags her dress.

I see my friend’s dolls so pretty, so well,
That I feel jealousy of their happiness.
Please Santa, come back and take it away!

Dear Santa, I hugged my doll yesterday
I told her some tales and we sang as well.
We shared our secrets and then fell asleep.

THE TRUE TREASURE

Once upon a time there was... a traveler who arrived at the main city in a distant country. He had taken a long journey in order to find the treasure which, according an old legend, was supposed to be buried in some hidden place in the mountains.

ACT Made Simple

Just bought a Kindle copy of Russ Harris's primer ACT Made Simple. I first discivered ACT through his self-help books, which have been transformational for me. I have really been enjoying and learning from the ACBS podcasts so I thought I would go a bit deeper and look into ACT as it is practised by therapists and others.

ACT in IRAN

ACT in the healing community

As a Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist, In Boca Raton, FL, I am one of the only therapists that are trained in and practice Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy in South Florida, let alone the South Eastern United States. I am thrilled to have had the honor to learn the foundation of ACT directly under Dr. Steven Hayes, the father of ACT, and inspired by many of ACT behavioral scientists who have helped me to enrich my technique in being an ACT Therapist. ACT is so very effective in helping individuals with depression, anxiety and pain.

You Probably Aren't The Best Person For The Job

Do you ever feel like you might not be the best person for the job?

Do you sometimes worry that people will find you out and realise that you aren't smart enough or knowledgable enough or skilful enough for the job?

Do you sometimes get distracted by the fear that people are thinking that you are the wrong person for the job? That they are wishing they had a different boss, coach, project manager?

When that fear that you aren't quite good enough comes up, what do you do?

What To Do With Feelings Of Shame

Do you think it is bad to feel ashamed?

In this interview, Maarten Aalberse suggests that we have a tendency to feel ashamed about feeling shame and that this causes us problems. He suggests responding to those feelings with empathy and compassion instead of trying to reject these painful emotions. What does that look like?

ACT Box :example of scoring .

A few clues about using ACT Box SAT in clinical practice with virtual examples.

When the client has scored the scales, you can use a stabilo or whatever else to underline the area. (file 1).

You can follow client progress on ongoing basis with the graph (File 2).

Derivation on The Matrix Model : ACT BOX Self assessment Tool (SAT)

HI everybody, here is my two cent's contribution based upon POLK Matrix Model.

The idea was to include Visual Analogic Scales (VAS)  to get client's assement of 4 Act Dimensions. This is a clinical tool, not a stantardized scale.

With the  3 files, you get a short rationale of the measure, the measure sheet, and a simple graph to report 10 sessions measure.

I wait for your comments !!!

Best,

Christophe Cazauvieilh, psychologist.

Olaz cards

This cards have been elaborated based in the book "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. An experiential Approach to Behavior Change" (Hayes, Strosahl and Wilson, 2003) and I find them very useful in my workshops. They are in spanish but if somoene is interested in the english version, please write me and I will prepare this version

Moving toward freedom

I have been asked by the good folks at Comporte-se in Brazil to become a columnist for their blog. Here's the first installment of my column in its English version.

I want to start this blog by thanking Comporte-se (Behave Yourself) for extending the invitation to blog on their site. I hope it will serve as a discriminative stimulus for me to blog regularly. I’d started a blog in French some years ago but as I got into writing books, let it go by the wayside.

How to Use Contextual Science to Super Charge Your Leadership Training

I recently heard of a leadership programme where it is expected that half way through the programme participants will contact the CEO of their large organisation to complain. They are doubtful about the usefulness of the programme and feel overwhelmed, stressed and angry. The CEO apparently responds by telling them to 'suck it up'. Why does he tell them this? Because he sees that, in the long run, the programme works - the majority of participants do become better leaders after the programme. They are wiser, more courageous and demonstrate more integrity.

We Are All Losers (Sometimes)--Part I

We use to think that bullying was the result of low self-esteem. Research is now showing the opposite is true. Bullies actually have high self-esteem. Bullying behavior is a way for them to take the attention off of their own sense of shame and put it onto someone else. And bullies get real good at finding this weakness in others so when they are able to do this successfully, their self-esteem is elevated. They feel better about themselves when they put others down, so they keep doing it.

We Are All Losers (Sometimes)--Part II

As promised, I am back with more on self-compassion. To recap, in determining measures of emotional health, self-compassion is a healthier replacement for self-esteem, which I no longer hold in very high esteem. Self-compassion is a mindful comparison to the ego driven façade of pretending you are better than you really are. This sounds harsh as I am typing it, but I am also a product of this culture where it seems like an insult to be regarded as average or less than perfect.

Beginner's Mind

In the practice of Zen there is a virtue to which we aspire called called Beginner’s Mind. It is like having the non-reactive mind of a child, innocent of prejudices, expectations, preconceived ideas, or bias. In this culture, we are rewarded for being experts. What is the value of expertise?
