'Iron Man 3' Extended Super Bowl Spot & New Images

For any comic book fan, the Iron Man 3 TV spot that aired during yesterday's Ravens victory was almost undoubtedly the highlight of the endlessly discussed Super Bowl commercials.  It's a hell of a thirty second spot, but in order to ensure that Iron Man 3 makes the biggest impression possible, Marvel Studios also rolled out an extended version, along with four new stills from Robert Downey Jr.'s next adventure as Tony Stark.

Having rerouted a nuke to save Manhattan in The Avengers, Tony is back for a solo outing that finds him going up against his comic book nemesis The Mandarin while also contending with a dangerous new technology that could change Stark's relationship to his armor forever or, in the wrong hands, hurt an awful lot of people.

The film stars Downey Jr. and fellow franchise veterans Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and Jon Favreau, along with newcomers like Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, Guy Pearce, James Badge Dale, and William Sadler.

The Super Bowl spot eschewed the usual blockbuster style of shock and awe through quick cuts, instead presenting a snippet of a huge airborne action sequence that finds a battered Iron Man trying to save more innocent people than he can reasonably carry.  It's undiluted superhero stuff and it looks great.  That scene is on display in this extended TV spot, with a playful Downey Jr. "extended look" and some more footage.

And now, on to the quartet of new images from the Super Bowl spot:

Last week, Marvel released a new still of the lovely Rebecca Hall as Maya Hansen, a scientist whose relationship with Tony goes back a ways.  Last week also saw the debut of some outstanding new poster art.

Shane Black takes over as director and co-writer with Iron Man 3 and so far it looks like he's doing a hell of a job.  We'll see for sure when the sequel arrives in theaters on May 3rd.
