Why Sanibel & Captiva? – Florida travelers give their answers

Got a reason why you love Sanibel & Captiva? Email us at info@weekaway.com and tell us why!

We’re looking forward to seeing some wildlife.

Bethany S. – Boston, Massachusetts

I love that bridge (Sanibel Causeway). it’s gorgeous.  I am excited at seeing the white beaches and smelling the sea air.

Irene P. – New York City

This is the first trip I ever made in my whole life entire life. I left my husband home milking the cows. I came to see the dolphins and the Gulf.

Brenda L. – Columbus, Wisconsin

Everything was incredible. I can’t imagine living on an island like this with a sunset every evening. It’s just so calming. We’re planning another trip down here to do the things we couldn’t do [this time].

Christine G. – Fort Knox, Kentucky

I never have been any place like it. The whole slow pace of life. I love the fact that you can bring dogs on the beach.

Denise C. – Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania

Rudi and I were back for a visit the week after Thanksgiving. All I can say is wow! The atmosphere on Sanibel was awesome – just the right amount of people on the island, and the weather was just fantastic. This kind of weather is so special, something typical to a tropical kind of climate – something we just don’t know here in Belgium. The incredible feeling of going to sleep without air conditioning and waking up to this perfect weather where you could wear jeans, sandals, a tee shirt and maybe need a light sweater later in the evening. It made us feel so energetic and at the same time relaxed. The weather invited us out to play – something we just don’t know here [in Belgium]. It was great to take a walk on the beach and not sweat to death (like in July).

Our dream is to someday (hopefully in the near future) spend more time on Sanibel and experience all the different seasons there. Having said all this, we still love coming back for the month of July, heat and all, to enjoy the beach and amazing warm Gulf water!

Rudi V. and Celena F. – Belgium

What made you choose these islands for your vacation?

We wanted some place that was more tropical. We had been to see family in Tampa several times and wanted somewhere different. Sanibel didn’t disappoint.

What makes these islands stand out from other places you’ve traveled to?

You really feel that you are on your own island. There is plenty to do. Riding bikes around the island is a fantastic time.

Kevin B. – Glen Ellyn, Illinois

What made you choose these islands for your vacation?

Great reputation, good waves, family-friendly trips. I am from Miami, FL and visited Captiva almost every summer as a kid.

What makes these islands stand out from other parts of Florida, or from other places you’ve traveled to?

Being from Miami, I have been to a lot of places in Florida, but Captiva is one of the best spots to really “get away.” If you go with friends you feel like you are on your own private island. It’s very laid back, a lot of fun, and as a kid I couldn’t get enough of boogie boarding on the waves.

Vincente F. – Miami, Florida

What made you choose these islands for your vacation?

Similar to Hawaii without the horrible flight time.

What makes these islands stand out from other parts of Florida, or from other places you’ve traveled to?

No concrete jungles (high rise condos, hotels or apartments) and just enough restaurants (NO CHAINS) & unique retail shops (again, no chains).

Gerald T. – St. Louis, Missouri

What made you choose that part of the country for your vacation?

Sunny, warm weather. Sanibel Island has been a family gathering place for our family for 40 years(Easter/Thanksgiving vacations).

What makes you keep coming back?

Sunny, warm weather, family get togethers.

What do you think makes Sanibel & Captiva stand out from other seaside destinations?

Not over developed/commercialized.
