Dining at Casa Ybel’s Thistle Lodge is dining in a piece of Old Florida history. Thistle Lodge was once the Victorian home of Edward and Georgia Dunn and one of the first structures on the island. When Georgia’s missionary father settled on Sanibel in the late 1800′s, he set up the island’s first inn complex. Soon, chilly northerners began flocking to the island, including the Kentucky-bred Edward Dunn, who later became Georgia’s husband. It was Georgia and Edward who renamed her father’s enterprise “Casa Ybel,” offering creature comforts that visitors knew and loved in the midst of Sanibel’s then-rustic environment.
Today, Thistle Lodge combines old world ambiance with cutting edge cuisine, all in an exquisite beach-view setting. Floridian, European and Asian gastronomic influences grace the menu, envisioned by Executive Chef John Wolff, who recognizes and appreciates the long-standing traditions that Casa Ybel has garnered over generations. Thistle Lodge has various dining rooms that are suitable for any type of group, from couples to large families. The lodge has been hosting wedding parties for over a century and makes a great venue for an “Old Florida” destination wedding reception.
