FCB drawn at home to Wolfsburg

Bayern have been handed a tough but manageable task in this season’s DFB Cup semi-finals. The next step in the quest for a record 16th cup triumph sees FCB entertain VfL Wolfsburg on 16 or 17 April. The draw for the last four was made on Sunday’s ARD Sportschau by German Touring Cars (DTM) ace Timo Glock and Germany goalkeeping coach Andreas Köpke. VfB Stuttgart are at home to SC Freiburg in the second semi-final tie.

“I’m only hoping for one thing: a home draw,” said Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes after Sunday’s Bundesliga clash against Hoffenheim. The 67-year-old was naturally delighted following the draw ceremony. “Luckily, it’s turned out as I wanted, although we’ll have to be very wary. Wolfsburg are unpredictable. We’ll have to remain very focused and come up with a top performance if we’re to make the final,” he told fcbayern.de.

Peak form in cup

The most recent of a total of three DFB Cup meetings with the Wolves took place some five years ago in March 2008, also at the semi-final stage. Munich won 2-0 and went on to beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in Berlin, claiming the trophy for the 14th time. The Reds also prevailed in the two previous encounters with Wolfsburg, 7-6 on penalties in the second round in 1997/98, and 2-1 in the Round of 16 in 2002.
