Cooking In Real Time: Passover Ready Spinach Mina

A special Passover dish in advance of the Jewish holiday.

I had the pleasure several years ago of attending a Passover Seder. The friend who invited me is from a Sephardic family originally from Syria. Because Sephardic Jews are from countries surrounding the Mediterranean, their food traditions differ from Jews in Eastern Europe.  Still following the dietary laws for Passover, the Sephardic Passover meals tend to be highly aromatic, with liberal use of spices, herbs and vegetables such as eggplant, artichokes and even asparagus. Interestingly, the Syrian Jews include rice in their Passover meals. In order to have dishes that meet their guests’ various dietary restrictions, this Passover Seder included several Minas. A Mina is a layered casserole of matzo and fillings, which can be vegetarian …

Legislation Would Ease Pressure on Pit Bull Owners and Landlords

Bills in the House of Delegates and Senate would create a new standard where all dog owners are presumed liable for dog attacks, regardless of the breed of the animal.

Legislation overriding a Maryland Court of Appeals ruling that made landlords liable for pit bull attacks, and put owners at risk of being evicted or having to give up their dogs, will be heard Wednesday by the House Judiciary Committee. Identical House and Senate bills seek to create a new standard where all dog owners in civil action cases, regardless of the dog’s breed, are presumed liable for attacks unless owners can prove they did everything possible to avoid the attack, said Sen. Brian Frosh, sponsor of the Senate bill. It would also reverse the strict liability on landlords. “The interest groups: pet owners, landlords, and animal rights groups are pleased with it,” said Frosh, a Montgomery County Democrat who is also chairman of …

This post is very interesting for me and I admired the content which is about pit bulls. I think all the owners of dogs must have insurance. It would be a good decision for an animal lover. Real Estate Bulls   more ›

Would Schools Be Safer With Armed Officers?

After the Newtown, CT school shooting, Maryland legislators are looking at a number of ways to make schools safer.

According to Annapolis Patch, delegates from Anne Arundel County are introducing legislation on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in hopes of increasing security and mental health services at public schools across the state. The proposed bill would also pay for an armed resource officer at each school. "If you really understand public schools in Maryland, you know this: They are becoming increasingly more difficult for classroom teachers because discipline is lacking at home and teachers are spending an increasing amount of time maintaining discipline in the classroom," said Del. Nic Kipke (R-Pasadena). In Montgomery County, Councilman Craig Rice (D-Dist. 2) of Germantown, a vocal advocate of school resource officers stationed in schools, told a room full …

Speak Out: School Safety In Montgomery County—Is It Enough?

Do guns belong in schools? How do we handle bullying? Should schools be a fortress or remain relatively open?

What is our most valuable resource if not our children? If our government buildings are protected by police, why shouldn't our children have the same protections? I don't see having an armed police officer at each school as over the top or oppressive, if done correctly. And security guards? C'mon. They are placeholders and a false sense of security. You want to make your police force really …   more ›

SPEAK OUT: Extra Cell Towers for Inauguration—Useful or Overload?

Is it just keeping up with the times, or another invasion of wireless technology?

For the upcoming presidential inauguration, a number of additional pieces of equipment are being installed in and around the National Mall to handle the expected increase in wireless traffic from advanced smartphones and tablets. While the equipment will allow attendees to update their Facebook statuses, tweet and upload images to Pinterest, it also means that there could be more opportunities for hackers to intercept communications from unwary revelers. The National Federation of Independent Business offers some tips on its website for keeping your mobile data safe. We want to know: Do you think the additional cell towers and equipment are needed to keep us up-to-date with recent technologies and forms of communication, or are they an …

In 2012, box office tallies increased for the first time in three years, hitting an all-time high of $10.8 billion, according to a recent Huffington Post article. Superheroes, secret agents, strong females wielding weapons, and animated fare took seven of the top 10 slots in terms of domestic gross, with Marvels' The Avengers raking in more than $623 million, The Dark Knight Rises over $448 million and the Hunger Games over $408 billion. Rounding out the top 10 were: While they may not (yet) be in the $200 million+ range, a number of other films are both critically and popularly acclaimed. The recently opened Les Miserables and Django Unchained seem likely to cross that barrier, while Lincoln, Argo and Life of Pi will probably enjoy a …
