Philadelphia Orchestra members surprise airplane passengers with impromptu concert

Getting stuck on the tarmac for three hours isn’t too bad if you’ve got these musicians on board. The orchestra members busted out their instruments and played a selection from Antonin Dvorak’s ‘American’ String Quartet.

This was one captive audience.

When four members of the Philadelphia Orchestra found themselves stuck on board a delayed flight for nearly three hours, they decided to get to work.

Two violinists, a cellist and a viola player took out their instruments and sheet music, gracing passengers with a lively rendition of Antonin Dvorak’s “American” String Quartet No. 12 Finale.

Several passengers were chosen to hold up sheet music while others whipped out their smartphones to tape the impromptu concert.

A cellphone rang during the performance, but the musicians laughed it off.

The five-minute piece was interrupted by a ringing cellphone. The musicians laughed it off.

The audience then remained quiet until the very end, when they erupted into cheers.

The orchestra members were on their way from Beijing to Macao for their 40th Anniversary Tour of China. In 1973, their predecessors made history by becoming the first U.S. orchestra to visit the country after the Cultural Revolution.
