San Diego Comic-Con 2013 Preview

A rundown of the movie, TV, and comics events that we're most psyched about.

And… we're back! Another San Diego Comic-Con is upon us, the biggest convention of the year for fans of comics, movies, TV, and everything else that comes with that territory. As always, your loyal IGN editors and staff will be in San Diego starting this Wednesday, reporting on the greatest and coolest news to come out of the show, big and small. We'll be bringing you the latest updates via written articles, videos, interviews, and of course our Comic-Con Livestream.

But in the meantime, let's take a look at some of the movie, TV, and comics events we're most looking forward to at San Diego Comic-Con 2013…

Marvel Movies

Duh. Marvel is usually the highlight of the show these days with their end-of-the-day Saturday panels that effectively prove to be the climax of the convention, even though the con has a whole other day after that before it's actually over. This year Marvel boss Kevin Feige will appear in the huge Hall H venue to talk about and presumably show footage from Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: The Dark World. No word yet on which actors will accompany him for the panel, but there will also be a screening and Q&A on Friday for the latest Marvel One-Shot short, Agent Carter, starring Captain America's Hayley Atwell. And, of course, expect some kind of surprise or special guests at the Marvel Hall H panel as well. Guardians of the Galaxy? A Doctor Strange or Black Panther announcement? Avengers 2 title reveal? We'll know soon enough… (Saturday, 6:00pm - 7:00pm)

The Amazing Spider-Man 2/RoboCop

Sony's big Hall H show will happen on Friday, wisely avoiding the Marvel event in order to capture the day for itself. Two years ago, Andrew Garfield won over pretty much everyone when he showed up in the audience at his own panel dressed in a cheap Spidey suit for the first Amazing Spider-Man film. Can he replicate that success this year (not that he's officially coming to the con, but come on… how can he not?) -- and will director Marc Webb have any announcements about the recently announced third and fourth films in the series? Expect some villain reveals, either in the person of Electro or Rhino, at least.

Meanwhile, Sony will also be showing off their RoboCop reboot with stars Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, and Samuel L. Jackson in attendance. (Friday, 4:05pm - 6:15pm)

Godzilla/Gravity/300: Rise of an Empire

Comic-Con did wonders for the original 300 all the way back in 2006, so can it do the same for the sequel, 300: Rise of an Empire, when it hits the Warner Bros. and Legendary panel on Saturday morning? Meanwhile, anyone who has seen the trailer for director Alfonso Cuarón's space-thriller Gravity knows that it will be worth keeping an eye on as well. And then there's the Godzilla reboot from Monsters director Gareth Edwards -- will a giant monster stomp on Hall H during this Q&A? It would truly be the panel to end all panels! (Saturday, 10:45am - 1:15pm)

Kick-Ass 2/Riddick

What more needs to be said? These two ass-kickers are coming to the Hall H stage on Friday from Universal. Actually, more than two, as in addition to Riddick's Vin Diesel, the film's Katee Sackhoff and Dave Bautista will also be in attendance along with writer/director David Twohy. As for Kick-Ass 2… we hear that in addition to Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chris Mintz- Plasse, director Jeff Wadlow, and others will be on site as well. (Friday, 12:15pm - 1:15pm)

Mutants and Apes

20th Century Fox's panel, which takes place immediately before the Marvel event on Saturday, will seriously have to impress in order to stand up to the House of Ideas. And it sounds like it just might. While the studio originally wasn't revealing any info about their Hall H presence, we have since gotten word that both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Wolverine will be featured (with cast members). But there will apparently also be a "a major surprise," which is increasingly sounding like an X-Men extravaganza is planned. Vulture says that Fox might be sending over a dozen Days of Future Past cast members to the event, while there's also speculation of an X-Force movie announcement (we know the recently revealed scripter of that whispered-about project, Jeff Wadlow, is already in town for Kick-Ass 2). Oh, and there's also rumors of a new Predator announcement! (Saturday, 4:15pm - 5:45pm)

I, Frankenstein/Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Lionsgate will also take the stage on Saturday in Hall H for I, Frankenstein, starring Aaron Eckhart and Yvonne Strahovski, and the Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. Eckhart, Strahovski, writer-director Stuart Beattie, and comics scribe Kevin Grevioux will be in attendance, while the studio's official announcement regarding Catching Fire simply says "the cast of the highly anticipated second installment of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire comes to Hall H for the first time." Does that include Jennifer Lawrence, who likely has an X-movie taking the stage right after this panel as well? Whatever the case, never-before-seen footage will be shown for both films. (Saturday, 1:35pm - 2:35pm)

Escape Plan Screening

Sly and Arnold, together again for the very first time! Yes, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, those two mega-stars of action cinema, will screen their first actual team-up film (the Expendables movies don't quite count, do they?) on Thursday night at the Reading Cinemas Gaslamp 15. The pair will be on hand to host the event, so if you're there you better enjoy it. Or else! (Thursday, 5:00pm)

Ender’s Game/Divergent

Summit brings their two new genre properties to Hall H on Thursday, along with Han Solo as well! Yes, for Ender's Game, new, exclusive footage will be shown and a Q&A with stars Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, producer Roberto Orci (Star Trek Into Darkness), and director Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will take place. And the first ever-footage from the young-adult novel adaptation Divergent will be screened, followed by a Q&A with novelist Veronica Roth, director Neil Burger, and cast members Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, and more. (Thursday, 3:50pm - 4:50pm)

Dead by Dawn

The Evil Dead remake is coming to Blu-ray, and director Fede Alvarez and star Jane Levy will be in town to celebrate the flick in all its bloody glory. No word yet on whether or not the chainsaw will also be along for the ride…

The World’s End

Friday morning in Hall H will be kicked off with the team of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost reuniting to talk up their new film, The World's End. As you surely already know, it's the conclusion of their Blood and Ice Cream trilogy that began with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Don't forget, Pegg and Frost have already made a movie about Comic-Con! They know what they're doing here… (Friday, 10:00am - 11:00am)
