nba rumors Chris Mullin is joining the Sacramento Kings' front office, according to sources familiar with the team's plans. Sources say that Mullin has been recruited by the Kings to expand upon his previous senior advisory role in support of new general manager Pete D'Alessandro and majority owner Vivek Ranadive. ESPN.com

For a team that has had little success the past five seasons, the Washington Wizards have been an unlikely source for teams looking for front office talent. Mike Wilson, the Wizards’ head of college scouting for the past nine seasons, is the latest to join the exodus from Washington after accepting a player personnel position with the Dallas Mavericks. Already this offseason, Pat Connelly left his position as director of player personnel to become assistant general manager of the Phoenix Suns and former vice president of player personnel Milt Newton was hired as general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Former assistant coach Jerry Sichting also left to become the lead assistant with the Suns and assistant athletic trainer Koichi Soto is expected to join the Timberwolves as head athletic trainer. The Phoenix Suns and Michael Beasley have reached an agreement to terminate the contract of the troubled forward. The move on Tuesday will cost the franchise $7 million, a $2 million savings from what Beasley would have been due had he simply been waived. It also represents a significant reduction in what the hit on the team's salary cap would have been. Beasley was arrested a month ago in suburban Scottsdale on charges of felony marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. It was the latest in a series of incidents involving the drug that have plagued his NBA career after he was selected as the No. 2 overall draft pick out of Kansas State in 2008. AP

The Lakers are three weeks away from training camp, and they’re still making tweaks to their roster. The team announced the signing of free agent forward Shawne Williams, whose career-best season in 2010-11 coincided with playing for coach Mike D’Antoni and the New York Knicks. The terms of Williams’ deal weren’t immediately available. But considering the Lakers want to keep financial flexibility for the 2014 offseason, it wouldn’t be surprising if Williams’ contract is a one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum. LA Daily News Blog

The Sacramento Kings ownership group and labor unions have come to an agreement over the use of unionized labor in the construction of a new arena at Downtown Plaza. Officials with the Kings, the city, building trades unions and Turner Construction - which has been signed on to lead construction of the arena - will announce the labor agreement at a noon press conference today at Downtown Plaza, according to a source briefed on the agreement. It is unclear if the agreement involves using exclusively unionized labor in the arena construction, or if some of the work would be done by non-union workers. Sacramento Bee

The Detroit Pistons said this morning that there is no change in Maurice Cheeks’ status as the team’s coach after reports surfaced that he was questioned in a domestic incident Friday night in Birmingham. Cheeks, 56, was brought to the Birmingham police station, questioned and released but not arrested after police were called to a Woodward Avenue address, according to WXYZ-TV. “He’s our head coach, so nothing changes with his status,” Pistons spokesman Kevin Grigg said today. “We are not commenting on the situation.” Detroit Free Press

NBA player Royce White -- who famously missed his rookie season with the Houston Rockets due to mental health issues -- is at the center of a criminal investigation in Texas after allegedly beating up his then-girlfriend ... TMZ has learned. We know ... White's ex-girlfriend Tania Mehra -- a Maxim model -- filed a police report on August 30 to report an incident that went down at Royce's Houston-area home back in June. According to law enforcement, records show someone called 911 on June 22, 2013 to report a laceration above Tania's right eye. Cops say at the time, Tania claimed she suffered the injury from an "accidental fall." TMZ

MAIN MORNING NBA RUMORS STORIES

nba rumors Jay Z is selling his minority ownership in the Brookyn Nets to coach Jason Kidd, sources exclusively tell Page Six. We’re told Kidd will take over Jay’s .067 percent (1/15th of a percent) stake in the team for about $500,000. The move comes as Jay was forced to sell his Nets shares over a conflict of interest after he started a sports agency, Roc Nation, signing clients including Yankee Robinson Cano and Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant. NY Post

Amazingly, Jay was introduced to the team in 2003 by Drew Katz, the son of one of the Nets’ principal owners, after Kidd, then the Nets’ marquee point guard, suggested the music mogul buy the team. NY Post

nba rumors An apologetic Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger is free on $5,000 bail after he was arrested yesterday on charges of assaulting his longtime girlfriend last weekend after she “found evidence on his cellphone that he was cheating on her,” Waltham cops said. Sullinger pleaded not guilty in Waltham District Court yesterday to assault and battery, destruction of property of more than $250 and witness intimidation. Boston Herald

“The experience was humbling and embarrassing for me,” Sullinger said in a statement. “Yet I know that this situation has brought both sorrow and embarrassment to my girlfriend, my family, the Boston Celtics organization, my teammates and my fans. To all of you, I apologize from the bottom of my heart.” Boston Herald

Sullinger’s defense lawyer, Charles Rankin, said in court that Sullinger and Smith were “longtime sweethearts’’ who met while attending Ohio State University, where Sullinger was a renowned basketball player. Rankin told Judge Gregory C. Flynn that Smith waited 10 hours before calling Waltham police for help Saturday. He also said Sullinger flew home to Columbus, Ohio, for a previously planned visit with his parents shortly after the alleged fight. Once he learned from Waltham police that they had a warrant for his arrest, Rankin said, Sullinger voluntarily returned to Waltham, where he went to the police station with his lawyer early Monday and surrendered. Boston Globe

nba rumors The Phoenix Suns waived forward Michael Beasley today pursuant to a termination agreement between the club and him. In accordance with that agreement, the compensation owed to him by the team will be reduced, and the Suns’ salary cap room will be increased for both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. InsideHoops

“The Suns were devoted to Michael Beasley’s success in Phoenix,” said Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby. “However, it is essential that we demand the highest standards of personal and professional conduct as we develop a championship culture. Today’s action reflects our commitment to those standards. The timing and nature of this, and all of our transactions, are based on the judgment of our Basketball leadership as to how best to achieve our singular goal of rebuilding an elite team.” InsideHoops

"(General manager) Ryan McDonough and I sat down with Michael very early in the summer, shortly after Ryan arrived, had a very candid and direct conversation with him about what our expectations were for the summer and that we would be evaluating the situation as the summer unfolded," Babby told Arizona Sports 620's Burns and Gambo Tuesday. "Obviously, those legal matters intervened and it's important for us to establish and maintain a championship culture, one that holds players to the highest standards both on and off the court." Arizona Sports

As for any "blame" that one may want to assign for the team signing Beasley in the first place? Lance Blanks, who was the GM at the time, is no longer with the Suns, while Babby, who was with them then and still is, lays out exactly why the Suns were willing to take a chance on the guy, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. "It was a gamble that we felt we could get a player of enormous potential at a price that would be below-market," he said. "Obviously, it didn't turn out that way, but I can say that we did our due diligence and we went into it with our eyes open." Arizona Sports

nba rumors The Los Angeles Lakers have signed free agent forward Shawne Williams, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Williams, a six-year NBA veteran out of Memphis, was originally selected by the Indiana Pacers in the first round (17th overall) of the 2006 NBA Draft and has appeared in 215 career games (23 starts) for the Pacers, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets. The 6-9 forward holds career averages of 5.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in 16.4 minutes. InsideHoops

In another sign that suggests he may be fully healthy for the beginning of the season, Lakers forward Pau Gasol spent Labor Day weekend playing on the basketball court for the first time since the team’s first-round loss last April to the San Antonio Spurs. “After this morning work, this evening I will get back to the basketball court wearing these!” Gasol wrote on his Instagram account, which featured a photo of his shoes. nba rumors Having produced two NBA championships with the Miami Heat, the next step for LeBron James will be producing scripted television comedy. The Starz cable network announced Tuesday that the Heat forward along with Tom Werner, Mike O'Malley, Maverick Carter and Paul Wachter will develop a half-hour scripted comedy series, Survivor's Remorse, for Starz, with James serving as an executive producer. South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Mike O'Malley will serve as executive producer and writer. He previously worked as consulting producer and writer on Shameless and as an actor in Glee, Justified and My Name is Earl. To James, who is not scheduled to appear in the series, it expands a presence that already has moved beyond the confines of the court. South Florida Sun-Sentinel

"I have a deep passion for the amazing television being created right now," the Heat forward said. "I love Boardwalk Empire, Magic City, Scandal and 24. When my business partners Tom Werner and Maverick Carter brought up the idea of creating a television series that would capture the story of what happens when you make it out, I jumped at the chance. "For Maverick and I even to be where we are right now, given where we came from, is kind of hard to believe. I felt like it was a story that needed to be told, and nobody can craft a story like Tom Werner. He has an incredible vision for television and I'm really excited to partner with him and the rest of our team." South Florida Sun-Sentinel

nba rumors Khloe Kardashian's ultimatum to Lamar Odom -- get into rehab or get out of our home -- hasn't exactly forced him to take action ... in fact, Lamar's gone completely off the grid with his wife ... TMZ has learned. We broke the story ... Khloe dropped the tough love on Lamar over the weekend. In the wake of his DUI arrest on Friday, sources tell us she made it clear to Lamar ... he needed to get help, or else the marriage is over. But we're told since they spoke for 4 hours on Saturday ... Khloe's heard absolutely nothing from Lamar. TMZ

LeBron James is bringing his talents to... Columbus? Technically, the two-time NBA champion is not going to be playing for Ohio State, but he now has a locker in the Buckeyes' locker room. Ohio State has added the locker with James' name and hometown for several reasons - one of which is that the team has a large supply of team-branded LBJ material. Fox Sports Florida
