About the Great School Sprint

The Great School Sprint is a competitive, inclusive running programme for children from Year 7. The Great School Sprint takes place in Portsmouth, Newcastle/Gateshead, Birmingham and Manchester.

European Indoor Champion Holly BleasdaleThe winner of each Great School Sprint competes over 150m at the BT Great CityGames Manchester in May. All Great School Sprint finalists have the chance to meet Elite Athletes competing in the BT Great CityGames Manchester. With 150m sprints, culminating in a final at the BT Great CityGames Manchester on the Deansgate track alongside some of the world’s best athletes.



Great School Sprint Format

Round 1: In School Competitions

Schools stage their own sprints to find their fastest five girls and boys. Each school receives an England Athletics teachers guide with helpful steps to prepare the children for their sprint challenge. The fastest boys and girls will progress to their city semi-finals and finals.

City Final

The fastest children will take part in 3 rounds of races, with each athlete having a master class in sprinting. England Athletics coaches and world class elite athletes are on hand to guide the participants through master classes. Participants also have the opportunity to meet the elite athletes.

Great School Sprint National Final: BT Great CityGames Manchester

The fastest boy and girl, from Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle/Gateshead and Portsmouth, compete in the national final on the BT Great CityGames Manchester track, on Deansgate, as part of the Great CityGames BBC Programme. The two winners will receive a trophy and are crowned Great School Sprint National Champion.
