Welcome to the Shatterdome: 'Pacific Rim' Opening and Closing Titles

So right now, San Diego is packed to the gills with fans lathered up about many big movies that won't actually see release until next summer.

With Pacific Rim in theaters, you don't have to wait a year.  Guillermo del Toro's most ambitious film to date is an earnest adventure with a sense of humor, staggering spectacle, and stakes that aren't built around grim solemnity.  It's a blast.

It's also just a joy to look at, as del Toro and his frequent collaborator cinematographer Guillermo Navarro provide their usual attention to sumptuous color, even in the middle of a giant battle between Jaeger and Kaiju in rain-soaked Hong Kong.  Visually, Pacific Rim doesn't quite look like any other big-ticket movie this summer.  Or any other summer, really.

The visual style is in some ways encapsulated by the film's opening and closing titles, created by Imaginary Forces.  Though Pacific Rim isn't a comic book movie, it has an eye for iconic imagery that we associate with larger-than-life heroes.  Both the opening and closing titles, presented here, pair Ramin Djawali score with visuals that cement the movie's style.

That's not all folks!

In addition to the titles above, we also have a three-minute behind-the-scenes featurette that looks at the visual effects of Pacific Rim.  Seeing rudimentary versions of a big VFX shot alongside the final polished shot never really gets old.  Similarly, seeing actors on a green screen stage that's then turned into a fantastical environment scratches some basic before-and-after-itch.

There's plenty of that here, as well as del Toro explaining, "I didn't want a movie that was technically right, but a movie that felt passionate."
