From some reason, this tale of mech Jaegers versus monstrous Kaiju failed to draw big American crowds this summer, despite a world-class auteur like del Toro offering up his most accessible, swing-for-the-fences crowdpleaser. Even with a cast full of ringers like Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr., and even Ron Perlman as Hannibal Chau.
But even if you missed Pacific Rim in theaters, you can catch it in high definition shortly. Warner Bros. has announced that the film hits Blu-ray Combo Pack on October 15th.
On the very same day, the movie will be available for download via iTunes, Xbox, PlayStation, Amazon, Vudu, CinemaNow and so on. But if you download it, you won't get all the special features included on the Blu-ray and DVD. These freshly announced special features include:
- Audio Commentary by Guillermo del Toro
- Drift Space
- The Digital Artistry of Pacific Rim
- The Shatterdome
- Focus Points
- Deleted Scenes
- Blooper Reel
Del Toro is a loquacious man. His audio commentary alone would be worth the price of a disc, but on the Blu-ray, you'll also find a featurette entitled The Director's Notebook. Del Toro maintains sketchbooks filled with designs and conceptual notes that qualify as works of art in and of themselves. This featurette doubtless examines one of his Pacific Rim notebooks.
