Our Work Combating Climate Change

When you select goods and services bearing the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo or Rainforest Alliance Verified™ mark, you know that you are contributing to sustainable land management, which means that forest ecosystems are restored or kept intact and can absorb the greenhouse gases that lead to climate change.

To earn the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal, farms are required to protect and restore tree cover. The Rainforest Alliance is also helping farmers to measure and verify carbon stored on their forested farms, and facilitating new projects that increase on-farm carbon sequestration. Read about our new guidance for reforestation carbon projects on coffee farms.

The Rainforest Alliance is working with verified tourism businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and encouraging them to purchase offsets for those emissions they cannot eliminate.

Carbon Project Verification and Validation

The Rainforest Alliance provides a range of verification services to confirm that carbon projects are conservation-oriented and meet established international standards for carbon sequestration. This enables company- and community-run projects to benefit from payments for carbon credits. Read more about forest carbon standards.

Education and Training

The Rainforest Alliance trains local organizations to design and develop effective forestry and agroforestry-based carbon sequestration projects. We also encourage governments to adopt climate policies that address the causes of deforestation and reward the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through forest conservation and reforestation.
