nba rumors Former Magic coach Stan Van Gundy was one of the key advisors who helped Dwight Howard decide to sign with the Houston Rockets. That's what Dwight Howard told reporters in Houston what Stan confirmed to Open Mike. From Dwight, courtesy of the Houston Chronicle: “I talked to Stan a lot during last season. During the offseason, we talked and he felt like the system that would fit me best and the coaching staff would be Houston. He said he liked (Kevin McHale). He likes (Hakeem Olajuwon). He likes (James Harden) and the fact that this is a young team. It reminds him of the team we had in Orlando so he felt like this would be a good fit for me.” Orlando Sentinel Howard went on to say that he now has a great relationship with the coach he tried to get fired in Orlando: “One side is business and one side is personal,” he told the Chronicle. “On the business end, we probably didn’t work well together toward the end of our careers in Orlando. But on the personal level, we have always had respect for each other. We have always been able to sit down and talk to each other.” Orlando Sentinel

nba rumors Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant returned to the team Tuesday after traveling to Germany to undergo the platelet-rich plasma treatment known as Orthokine on his right knee. Bryant walked off the team bus and into Citizens Business Bank Arena on his own power and without any visible limp. "He said it went great and it feels good," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. ESPN LA

Bryant, 35, is still recovering from surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon. There is no firm timetable for his return, but he has been able to do some light jogging and set shooting during the first week of training camp. "Just keep grinding. Keep working hard and getting better," Bryant said of his Achilles rehab Tuesday in a courtside interview with Time Warner Cable during the Lakers' 90-88 preseason win over the Denver Nuggets. "I gotta get in shape, too. I've been sitting on my butt now for a while. I gotta get up and get moving." ESPN LA

nba rumors Rockets center Marcus Camby, expected to be out another two weeks with a foot injury, could be out much longer if things don’t improve soon. Camby said Wednesday that the therapy he has been trying is to improve his condition enough to avoid surgery that would likely keep him out for as much as two months. Houston Chronicle Blog

“My plantar fascia is torn,” Camby said. “I’m trying to do whatever I can to avoid surgery. We’re just going to rehab it and see how it goes in the next two weeks and take it from there. We don’t want to rehab it and nurse it and have it still be lingering. That is something I’m going to sit back and figure out and definitely look toward long term, as the season progresses to the second half of the season. I have to be smart about it.” Houston Chronicle Blog

nba rumors Amar’e Stoudemire is ramping up his workouts and says he could play in the Knicks’ final two preseason games and the season opener against Milwaukee Oct. 30. After flying through his most strenuous workout Tuesday, Stoudemire came into the press room, sweating profusely and exuding optimism he didn’t show on Media Day nine days ago. Stoudemire went through a host of solitary basketball drills and did his usual training-room workouts — running in the pool and using an exercise machine. NY Post

“It’s going great,’’ Stoudemire said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the progress right now. I’m still getting stronger, still getting strong enough to withstand the pressure of playing. The progress has been great so far.’’

As Amar'e Stoudemire shot on the far end of the court Tuesday, Carmelo Anthony said it's "sad" to see his teammate continually fight back from injuries. Anthony is at the top of his game, but he knows he may never play with Stoudemire at an All-Star level again. "Yeah, I think about it," Anthony said. "I think about it sometimes. He was one of the reasons why I wanted to come to New York. So for me not to have that chance, the opportunity to get a full season in and get a rhythm going with him, it's not something I thought would happen." NY Newsday

Stoudemire said "it's a possibility" he could play in the Knicks' regular-season opener Oct. 30. The six-time All-Star also remains confident he can return to his old form, but it's another long road ahead following another knee surgery. NY Newsday

nba rumors The Trail Blazers were back at practice Tuesday after making their preseason debut Monday in an 89-81 loss to the Clippers. That meant a little more court time for two of their key players, LaMarcus Aldridge and Mo Williams. The veterans, who both sat out Monday’s game nursing injuries, went through Tuesday’s workout. Neither was sure if he would play in the team’s second exhibition game, against Phoenix at the Moda Center on Wednesday. Aldridge continues to come back from a strained left quadriceps he suffered last Wednesday while running a sprint. Oregonian

Jarrett Jack’s locker is right in between Dion Waiters and Kyrie Irving at both the arena and practice facility. That’s not a coincidence. It only makes sense for Jack to immerse himself with the two young guards since the three of them will be playing so much together, but it’s also so Jack can keep one eye on each of the youngsters. Akron Beacon Journal

Anthony Bennett has struggled mightily in both the Wine & Gold game and Tuesday’s preseason opener. He looks … rattled. He missed all three of his 3-pointers Saturday and badly clanked his first attempt Tuesday off the side of the backboard. Then after he was woefully short on a free throw attempt, C.J. Miles stepped into the lane and tried calming him down. Bennett finished with seven points and an impressive 10 rebounds in 23 minutes, but he shot just 2 of 12 and struggled defensively. Brown made it clear Bennett’s defensive lapses were a big reason why he had to cut through so many timeouts. Akron Beacon Journal

NBA analyst Chris Webber called the Cavs “the best young talented team in the league” on a conference call Tuesday morning. Fellow analyst Greg Anthony and Webber both agreed this will be a huge season in terms of the Cavs’ development if they are to take the next step from a young team with potential to a legitimate team to fear. “Jarrett Jack was one of best pickups by anybody in the NBA this past offseason,” Anthony said. “He’s the perfect player to compliment what Waiters and Kyrie are able to do.” Akron Beacon Journal

The Bucks starters in Tuesday's preseason opener against Cleveland will be the same five that have worked together the first week in practice: Brandon Knight, O.J. Mayo, Larry Sanders, Caron Butler and Ersan Ilyasova. Coach Larry Drew revealed the lineup in his pre-game comments made outside the Bucks locker room at Quicken Loans Arena. "These guys have got to get familiar with playing with one another," Drew said of the starters. "They've had a little over a week together going through all of our things. But certainly I want to look at some different combinations. But that will be how we start it." Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

The Los Angeles Clippers announced today that they have waived Mustapha Farrakhan and JaMychal Green. The Clippers roster now stands at 16 players. Farrakhan played seven minutes in last night’s 89-81 win over the Portland Trail Blazers, while Green had three rebounds in four minutes of action. InsideHoops

nba rumors When [Rashard] Lewis joined the Heat last October, he wasn’t anywhere near healthy enough to contribute consistent minutes. After signing with the Heat in July of 2012, Lewis revealed to the Miami Herald on Tuesday he had OssaTron shock wave therapy on both of his knees that August. Doctors instructed him to take six weeks off, but also said he wouldn’t be fully recovered from the procedure for six months. Wade had the OssaTron procedure on his knee this summer. Miami Herald

“They told me it would be a six-month healing process over time,” Lewis said. “It’s not going to feel good overnight. It was just something I had to continue to work on with rehabbing and building my lower body up. “I’d say around January or February of last season is when I really felt good and healthy but at that time we were really rolling as a team and my job was to continue to support the team … and continue to work on my body and get healthy.” Miami Herald

The Atlanta Hawks just lost some frontcourt depth for the near future. Hawks forward/center Gustavo Ayon experienced a right shoulder injury during Atlanta’s game last night at Miami. An MRI and examination today by Dr. Michael Bernot at Peachtree Orthopedics in Atlanta revealed inflammation and a strain to the rotator cuff. InsideHoops

The Miami HEAT announced today that they have exercised their team option on guard Norris Cole for the 2014-15 season. Cole has appeared in 145 career games (six starts) and averaged 6.1 points, 2.0 assists, 1.5 rebounds and 19.7 minutes while shooting 40.7 percent from the field. Last season, he led the Miami reserves in assists 37 times, steals on 29 occasions, points 12 times and in rebounds and minutes six times each. InsideHoops

The Chicago Bulls announced today that the team has waived guard/forward Dahntay Jones. Jones originally signed with Chicago as free agent on Sept. 27, 2013. InsideHoops

Brad Stevens had said he planned to watch the tape of Monday's exhibition opener immediately and noted that what he saw in film review didn't differ much from what his eyes told him on the floor. "We can get a lot better defensively in what we're trying to do," he said. "Some of those things are very correctable. And then I think we can get a lot better on the glass. We're just going to have to do it more by committee than individually... Offensively, I thought we had times during the game where we really moved the ball and got great looks, and then we had times where we got a little stagnant -- again, very correctable; getting used to one another, getting used to a new coaching staff, new system. I took a lot more positives than negatives from it." ESPN Boston

Matt Bonner had been hoping to squeeze at least another 60,000 miles out of his 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix. Alas, the Red Mamba’s sweet ride was put out of commission near the end of last season. Bonner declined to reveal details, but an exclusive Express-News investigation has learned that it was totaled in an accident. (Chalk up another one for the shmohawks.) San Antonio Express-News Blog

After making do for several months with an El Camino, he finally settled on a full-time replacement: the 2014 Chevy Impala, which beat out a slew of luxury competition to become the Official Car of Matt Bonner. San Antonio Express-News Blog

Houston Rockets rising star Chandler Parsons admitted he went out on a dinner date with Philippine actress KC Concepcion on Tuesday night, months after a Twitter exchange that caught the attention of showbiz and sports fans alike. Parsons, a Rockets sophomore who is in the country to play in the NBA preseason game against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday, confirmed he met with Concepcion during an interview with local mediamen during Wednesday’s media availability day at the Mall of Asia Arena. “I did,” said Parsons, when asked by a reporter if he had met Concepcion during the Rockets’ stop in Manila for the NBA Global Games. “We had dinner last night.” Spin.ph
