An independent report published by analysts at PSFK Labs takes a brief look at on how important light is in our daily lives and how new technologies will alter and create more powerful ways for us to use light. The study, titled “The Future of Light,” was funded by the electronics giant Philips. It can be summarized under four themes.

1. Light illuminates relationships. Lighting designs change people's relationships with their friends, family and surroundings as well as with the products they use.

- Expressive LED desk lamp Clyde responds to the mood of its owner and to the environment.

INAHO -- free-standing LED bulbs -- glow and gently lean toward people as they approach.

- Like the Clink Street Tunnel project in London, pedestrian walkways can be illuminated with unique effects while improving people's safety.

- Light brings people together. A specially designed engagement ring lights up when fiance is nearby

Light expresses the identity of an individual, a brand or an entire city. Scalable light technologies make it possible to visually express our identities and imaginations.

- With the touch of a button, the colors of a building can change in real time to match different events and occasions.

Hue Bulbs sync with music to create different moods indoors.

Light is a communications tool that can convey visual information through color, design and frequency or act as a medium for transmitting data over distances.

A laser projection project by Nike and Doubleyou helps us play football anywhere at night.

USB rechargeable bike lane safety light designed by XFire provides cyclists with added security when riding at night.

- LED systems in supermarkets can send discount alerts to shoppers' phones.

- Prototypes like PoolLiveAid will help players to line up their shots on pool tables or the like.

Light impacts our lives. Innovative new technologies promote well being. Light therapies can help reset our biometric rhythms.

The Photon Shower realigns a traveler's biological clock after long hours of flights across different time zones.

- Philips HealWell, a dynamic lighting system, mimics natural light to help patients improve their sleep patterns.

Colorful LED lighted interiors can both greet and soothe hospital patients, distracting them from their medical ailments.

- Philips' Ambient Experience technology allows patients use a touchscreen tablet to select one of 10 different themes in imaging rooms that are expressed in lighting, visuals and sound.
