November 1

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi

The International Military seek out a leader who can save the human race from an alien attack. Ender Wiggin, a brilliant young mind, is recruited and trained to lead his fellow soldiers into a battle that will determine the future of Earth.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Ender Wiggin's initial fate in the hands of Gavin Hood makes us want to question that people who decided to place such a huge responsibility on the shoulders of the guy who directed The Wolverine. Though in the mix there are a couple savvy veteran producer types and one experienced cinematographer, a position where some people can literally call the shots.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Drama | Sci-Fi

Metascore: 54/100 (7 reviews)
At the age of 21, Tim discovers he can travel in time and change what happens and has happened in his own life. His decision to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend turns out not to be as easy as you might think.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Anna Karenina seems to have put Domhnall Gleeson on the minds of studio casting agents; the young Irishman has vaulted to the top of the pile of actors who are testing for this, testing for that ... In terms of the latest from Richard Curtis (Love Actually), we'll see how Gleeson and co-star Rachel McAdams handle a story that makes us wonder if Nicholas Sparks has a sibling who is a mystical, sci-fi lover.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy

Three sixty-something friends take a break from their day-to-day lives to throw a bachelor party in Las Vegas for their last remaining single pal.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Instantly labelled as "The Geriatric Hangover", the most surprising thing about Jon Turteltaub's latest is to realize that Kevin Kline is officially old.

Certificate PG Animation | Comedy

Two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history - and get turkey off the holiday menu for good.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Making a movie about talking turkeys on a mission to revise holiday history, with Woody Harrelson in the voice-over booth, is one of the best, most-baked movie ideas we've heard in a while.

November 8

  -   Action | Adventure | Fantasy

Metascore: 56/100 (5 reviews)
Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: I feel like Thor is the best Marvel achievement to date in that it (a) celebrated its underdog status; (b) found a smart balance between its humor and emotion; and (c) featured the delicious Idris Elba. And I mean Loki is one of the best big-screen villains in popcorn-movie history. So knowing that the sequel reunites the original cast (including Tom Hiddleston), introduces Christopher Eccleston as Malekith the Accursed (a dark-elf overlord that has an entwined history with Loki), and places Alan Taylor from "Game of Thrones" in the director's chair, it has all the makings of the first winning Marvel sequel (no apologies to Iron Man 2).

November 15

Biography | Crime | Drama

Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: We get the feeling that Martin Scorsese will keep working with Leonardo DiCaprio until he helps his leading man secure his first Best Actor Oscar win. Remember how well the contemporary crime genre worked for Scorsese with The Departed, though politics -- widely believed to be his unwillingness to be positioned ahead of his co-stars -- kept DiCaprio out of the Oscar hunt that year. But this is a leading role; the fine supporting cast exists to provide all the necessary context and shading to flesh out this real-life story based on former broker Jordan Belfort's best-selling memoir.

Certificate R Comedy

When college friends reunite after 15 years over the Christmas holidays, they will discover just how easy it is for long-forgotten rivalries and romances to be ignited.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: We hear a reunion dinner brought about this sequel to the 1999 hit, and the original cast -- most of them swoon-worthy -- is being wooed to reprise their roles. We love you, Sanaa Lathan!

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | War

While subjected to the horrors of WWII Germany, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. Under the stairs in her home, a Jewish refuge is being sheltered by her adoptive parents.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Sophie Nélisse, who made her debut in art-house hit Monsieur Lazhar, will expand her fanbase as the star of this how-exactly-do-you-approach-it adaptation of the young-adult novel that features Death as its narrator. "Downton Abbey" Emmy-winner Brian Percival takes his second turn in the movie-director chair.

November 22

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi | Thriller

Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: The Hunger Games was the most satisfying franchise-starter in some time; a true measure of its success were the positive reactions from people who had yet to read the novels before seeing the movie. We love that the sequel was filmed in Hawaii, an ideal setting for the beautiful harshness of the Quarter Quell. Cast and crew wise, we're less concerned about any choices made by director Francis Lawrence and more worried about Sam Claflin as the knot-tying/Katniss-wooing Finnick Odair, because he displayed an innate talent for making time stand still in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Snow White and the Huntsman.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy

An affable underachiever finds out he's fathered 533 children through anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years ago. Now he must decide whether or not to come forward when 142 of them file a lawsuit to reveal his identity.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: DreamWorks has imported director Ken Scott from Canada to remake his comedy Starbuck (he also wrote The Grand Seduction, the upcoming movie from Scott Pilgrim's Don McKellar). It's a no-brainer role for Vince Vaughn, whose aggressive charm is a tricky fit in mainstream fare. Meanwhile, we have our eye on Irish actor Jack Raynor; he's received insider attention for the film What Richard Did and reportedly will share much of the screen time with Vaughn. Also, isn't the title of this movie sorta gross?

Certificate R   -   Adventure | Drama

Metascore: 78/100 (9 reviews)
An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: There's lots of chatter concerning the box-office risk of releasing a black & white film, even though Oscar winners (The Artist) and indie breakthroughs (Frances Ha) neutralize the matter. We'd rather focus on Alexander Payne's braver choice to cast Bruce Dern and Will Forte as the father-and-son duo, since Payne had starrier options -- such as the chance to reunite with Jack Nicholson. The word from the Cannes Film Festival indicates this is a quiet, elegant triumph.

November 29

Certificate PG Animation | Action | Adventure | Comedy | Family | Fantasy | Musical | Mystery | Romance | Thriller

Fearless optimist Anna teams up with Kristoff in an epic journey, encountering Everest-like conditions, and a hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna's sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter.
Directors:

Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Jennifer Lee, co-writer of the deserved hit Wreck-It Ralph, was placed in the co-director's chair alongside Chris Buck (Surf's Up) for Disney's adaptation of this Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale.

Certificate R   -   Action | Drama | Mystery | Thriller

Obsessed with vengeance, a man sets out to find out why he was kidnapped and locked up into solitary confinement for 20 years without reason.
Director:

The Buzz: Spike Lee spoke freely about how hard it is for him to get film financing at this point in his career, but I think that was a smart dodge by a veteran filmmaker who is a director-for-hire on a remake of a beloved genre film that had trouble holding onto its cast before cameras rolled. But the set cast is fantastic, screenwriter Mark Protosevich is demand, and the studio FilmDistrict does like to take chances with darker-themed material.

Certificate PG Drama | Musical

A street-wise teen from Baltimore who has been raised by a single mother travels to New York City to spend the Christmas holiday with his estranged relatives, where he embarks on a surprising and inspirational journey.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Four films in, director Kasi Lemmons (Talk to Me, Eve's Bayou) has switched up genres each time, and her latest film, based on the gospel musical by Langston Hughes, might be her greatest success to date. And we're happy for a second on-screen sighting of Angela Bassett this year.

Certificate PG-13   -   Biography | Drama | History

A chronicle of Nelson Mandela's life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Could be a major year for Idris Elba if Pacific Rim emerges as a global hit and his portrayal as Nelson Mandela in the decade-in-the-making film version of his autobiography. Freedom for Nelson. Democracy for South Africa. Oscars for Idris and Naomie.
