A woman who wanted to keep her newborn a secret from her husband left the baby naked, filthy and shivering in the boot of her car.
The Daily Mail reports the 45-year-old Portuguese mother was in custody in France after mechanics discovered the child in the car boot.
She had left the vehicle at a garage where mechanics discovered the child lying in a basket and suffering from dehydration.
The baby, believed to be about 12-months-old, was taken to hospital.
Police said they were overcome with the "stench" when they opened the boot.
The mother and her husband, who was reportedly drunk and riding his scooter, were arrested.
DNA tests on the child were ordered to establish her exact age and prove the couple were her parents.
