NBA DAILY FOR SUNDAY, OCT. 13
Recaps of NBA games played Saturday

nba game recaps Rose sits but Bulls defeat Wizards 83-81 -- The AP reports: RIO DE JANEIRO -- Derrick Rose missed the first NBA game played in South America on Saturday, sitting out the Chicago Bulls' 83-81 victory over the Washington Wizards with soreness in his surgically repaired left knee. The NBA star's absence disappointed a sellout crowd of 13,635 at the HSBC Arena in Rio -- the gymnastics venue at the 2016 Olympics -- where the top ticket price for the preseason game was 2,000 Brazilian reals ($915). Taj Gibson led the Bulls with 18 points and Luol Deng added 14. Bradley Beal paced Washington with 16. Rose had played two preseason games without any sign of problems, but Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said the knee flared up in practice Friday and Rose ended his work about halfway through the session.

Celtics beat Knicks 111-81 for 1st preseason win -- The AP reports: MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Brad Stevens will celebrate his first NBA coaching victory when it counts. Stevens was content to focus on the improvement the Boston Celtics made from one night to the next in a 111-81 preseason victory over the New York Knicks on Saturday night. Boston was winless in its first three exhibition games under Stevens, who was hired away from Butler to take over the storied franchise at the age of 36. "If I'm not going to count those last three, I can't count this one I guess," Stevens joked. The Celtics scored at least 24 points in every quarter, shot 54 percent and -- most importantly -- looked little like the team that lost to Philadelphia 97-85 the night before. "We got the ball up the floor. We played with good pace. I just thought we didn't labor as much offensively as we did yesterday," Stevens said.

Drummond leads Pistons to 99-88 win over Nets -- The AP reports: NEW YORK -- Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and the rest of the Brooklyn Nets are still trying to mesh on the court. Especially on defense. Garnett and former Boston Celtics teammate Pierce had their first Brooklyn home game spoiled Saturday night as Andre Drummond 15 scored points and first-round pick Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 12 for the Detroit Pistons in a 99-88 victory on Saturday night. For the second straight game, Brooklyn had some defensive lapses inside the paint and couldn't stop the lobs that Drummond was getting at the rim. The Nets gave up 32 points in the paint after allowing 46 against the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night.

Raptors win foul fest over Timberwolves, 104-97 -- The AP reports: MINNEAPOLIS -- Austin Daye scored 12 points to help the Toronto Raptors win a sloppy preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, 104-97 on Saturday night. Tyler Hansbrough was the only other Raptor in double figures with 11. The Raptors shot 50 percent to overcome 35 fouls and three technicals for delay of game, which is a point of emphasis with officials this season. Kevin Love had 28 points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes for the Timberwolves.

Pargo has 22 to spur Bobcats past Bucks 83-76 -- The AP reports: MILWAUKEE -- Bobcats coach Steve Clifford liked his team's defense just as much as its offense. Jannero Pargo scored 14 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter to help the Charlotte Bobcats erase a 21-point deficit and rally for an 83-76 preseason victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night. The Bobcats outscored the Bucks 33-9 in the fourth quarter, opening the period with a 20-2 run sparked by Pargo's 10 points. "That final group, obviously we scored 33, but we started defending," Clifford said. "Even in the third quarter, our defense was a lot better. Then when those guys went in, they stayed with the defense. We got stops, we got rebounds and then we were able to get out and get some easy baskets."

Mullens, Jordan lead Clippers past Jazz, 106-74 -- The AP reports: SALT LAKE CITY -- Byron Mullens scored 15 points, DeAndre Jordan had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Blake Griffin added 12 points in limited minutes to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 106-74 win over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night. Richard Jefferson had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead the Jazz, and Alec Burks added 12 points. Utah rookie point guard Trey Burke, acquired from Minnesota after the Timberwolves selected him ninth overall in the NBA draft, broke his right index finger in the first quarter. He returned to play nearly eight minutes in the second quarter before X-rays at halftime revealed the fracture. Team doctors will further evaluate Burke's condition on Monday.

NBA DAILY FOR SATURDAY, OCT. 12
Recaps of NBA games played Friday

nba game recaps Raptors beat Knicks 100-91 in preseason
The AP reports: TORONTO -- DeMar DeRozan scored 20 points to lead the Raptors to a 100-91 preseason victory over the New York Knicks on Friday night, spoiling Andrea Bargnani's return to Toronto. Bargnani, who was traded to the Knicks in the offseason for three players and three draft picks, scored 10 points in 22 minutes. There was some booing throughout the game aimed at the 2006 overall No. 1 pick who averaged 15.2 points and 4.8 rebounds over seven seasons with the Raptors. "The fans have the right to do whatever they feel they want to do," the 7-foot Bargnani said after the game. "We had some good years, we had some bad years. The only thing I have to say about the fans in Toronto is that I was lucky to play here for seven years." Carmelo Anthony had 24 points and eight rebounds for the Knicks (1-1).

76ers beat Celtics 97-85 in preseason
The AP reports: NEWARK, Del. -- Thaddeus Young had 20 points and five rebounds to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 97-85 preseason victory over the Boston Celtics on Friday night. Spencer Hawes had 17 points and seven rebounds and Evan Turner added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Sixers, who won their first preseason game on this side of the Atlantic Ocean after playing two earlier this week in Europe. Jared Sullinger had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who dropped to 0-3 in the first preseason of coach Brad Stevens.

Cavaliers beat Magic 110-105 in preseason
The AP reports: ORLANDO, Fla. -- Overall No. 1 draft pick Anthony Bennett scored 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and Dion Waiters had 21 as the Cleveland Cavaliers rallied for a 110-105 preseason victory over the Orlando Magic on Friday night. Bennett, who missed his first five shots while picking up five fouls, hit his last six field goal attempts, including two 3-pointers. Kyrie Irving finished with 17 points and five assists for Cleveland (2-0). Victor Oladipo, the second pick in the draft, led Orlando with 18 points and three assists.

Heat beat Bobcats 86-75 in preseason
The AP reports: KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- It's not often Mario Chalmers receives a louder ovation than LeBron James., his Miami Heat teammate. On Friday night, the two-time defending NBA champions were playing the Charlotte Bobcats at the Sprint Center, about 40 miles from the University of Kansas, where Chalmers starred on the Jayhawks' national championship team. So Chalmers wasn't surprised to receive more of a reaction from the crowd during the 86-75 preseason victory. In fact, he expected it. "It's custom out here, it's supposed to be like that," Chalmers said. "Anytime I get to come back and play in front of the Jayhawks fans it's a lot of fun." James paced the Heat (3-0) with 20 points while Chalmers added 10 points and four assists.

Trail Blazers beat Jazz 96-86 in preseason
The AP reports: BOISE, Idaho -- Damian Lillard scored 23 points and LaMarcus Aldridge added 20 to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to their first win of the preseason, 96-86 over the Utah Jazz on Friday night. Lillard, the NBA Rookie of the Year last season, had 15 points in the first half. Aldridge, who finished 8 of 9 from the field, scored 10 points in the third quarter for Portland (1-2). Gordon Hayward led Utah (1-1) with 20 points and Enes Kanter added 11.

nba game recaps Heat beat Pistons 112-107 in preseason
The AP reports: AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Dwyane Wade was back on the court for the Miami Heat. Wade, who missed the preseason opener saying he was "erring on the side of caution," played 21 minutes and had eight points and four assists in a 112-107 victory over the Detroit Pistons... Chris Bosh scored 28 points for Miami (2-0). James Jones added 12 points and LeBron James and Michael Beasley had nine each for the reigning NBA champions. James had seven assists... Will Bynum had 28 points and Andre Drummond added 21 points and 11 rebounds for Detroit (0-1), which committed 23 turnovers.

Rockets beat Pacers 116-96 in 1st game in Manila
The AP reports: MANILA, Philippines -- James Harden scored 21 points Thursday to lead the Houston Rockets to a 116-96 win over the Indiana Pacers in the first NBA preseason game in the Philippines. Omri Casspi added 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for Houston, while Paul George led the Pacers with 17 points. Dwight Howard was held to nine points in his second game for the Rockets after struggling with foul trouble, and had four turnovers. Houston coach Kevin McHale started Patrick Beverly at point guard and Terrence Jones at power forward instead of Jeremy Lin and Donatas Motiejunas, who started in the first preseason game.

Timberwolves top Bucks 98-89 in preseason
The AP reports: SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Othyus Jeffers had 13 points and six rebounds to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 98-89 preseason victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night. Gorgui Dieng, a 6-foot-11 rookie center out of national champion Louisville, pulled down nine rebounds and blocked four shots for Minnesota. "He's a smart player," Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman said. "He knows what we want him to do. He's not intimidated by anybody." John Henson led the Bucks with 16 points and Caron Butler added 13. Milwaukee finished with 23 turnovers.
