Fan vid: the sneak peek trailer combined with snippets of Howard Shore’s score

Thorin_Oakenshield Ringer Antonio has taken the sneak peek trailer (that’s trailer #3), and combined it with some snippets that we’ve heard so far of Howard Shore’s score. It’s not always a seamless experience, but it’s an interesting one that, perhaps, provides a better indication of how the finished product might look, sound and feel next month.

Check it out for yourself! (more…)

A Tolkien Collection worth the Pilgrimage

Greisinger Museum, exterior of entranceRecently I reported on the first Tolkien-based tour in the Swiss Alps, “In the Footsteps of Tolkien,” run by the Alpenwild company. I mentioned that our group ended the tour by visiting the brand-new Greisinger Museum, home to the world’s largest private collection of Tolkien art, books, and collectibles.

The image to the right shows the entrance to the museum, looking remarkably like the façade of Bag End transferred into a neighborhood in the prosperous eastern Swiss village of Jenins.

We had stayed the previous night in Chur, a charming small city with an old center with some buildings dating back to the medieval period, including a beautifully preserved cathedral. After a brief tour there, we took a short train ride to Landquart, the nearest station, and then took a taxi out to Jenins. As during the rest of our tour, the weather was sunny and mild. (more…)

Penkridge Tolkien - Oct 2013 032_smallerFor a time in 1918, a cottage at Gypsy Green on the Teddesley Park Estate was home to J.R.R. Tolkien and his family, when the young officer was posted in Staffordshire. Now, nearly 100 years later, a local library is celebrating the area’s ties to the renowned author.

Hobbit Festival Family Fun Day will be held this Saturday, November 16, 2013 in Penkridge, Staffordshire, UK from 10 A.M. until 4 P.M at Penkridge Library. Admission for the event is free, along with many fun activities. Only face painting will cost a small charge. (more…)

The Producers Guild of America has selected Peter Jackson, Joe Letteri, and WETA Digital to receive the 2014 Vanguard Award

Weta-1Awards season officially began this past weekend with the BAFTA awards in LA on Saturday night, televised on Sunday on BBC America. A quick scan of what’s playing in local theaters will show a healthy mix of big blockbuster movies and art house films, many you will not have heard of, but those are the films that will be contending for Awards early next year. People in Hollywood will be pulling out their Tuxedos and beaded gowns and slimming down, getting ready for the Red Carpets to come in January. Alongside all the nominated filmmakers are Awards for those with recognized bodies of works. And today the Producers Guild of America has announced that the recipients of its 2014 Vanguard Award will be Peter Jackson, Joe Letteri and WETA Digital. The Ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California during the 25th Annual Producers Guild Awards on January 19th. For more details, please read the full story at Variety.com

From all the Staff at TheOneRing.net, Congratulations, Huzzah! We love your work so far, we can’t wait to see what you have in store for us in these next two films, and we have faith you will keep us entertained for years to come.

Tune in to TheOneRing.net Live on Sunday for our brand new show: TORn Book Club!

TORn Book Club

This Sunday, November 10th, at 3PM PST, TheOneRing.net Live is proud to premiere our brand new show: TORn Book Club!

Hosted by long time staffer Sarumann, this show will focus on literature and all things to do with reading and writing. While we certainly have a bias toward Tolkien, this show will not focus only on Tolkien and his works, but also on all manner of classic fantasy and science fiction. As the title implies, this will have a book club feel to it. Every month, we will choose a book for you, the viewers, to read, and we will have a discussion on the book at the end of that month. We know that our fans are voracious readers, and love to discuss what they find.

But the show isn’t just book discussions! With November being National Novel Writing Month, fans who are participating are encouraged to tune in and share your progress! Each week in November, we will be discussing the ups and downs of writing, and giving advice and pointers to the aspiring writers in the crowd.

When we can, we will also have author guests on the program to discuss their works and their experiences as writers.

We will also be announcing the monthly winners for our “Rewrite Tolkien” contest on this show!

As you can see, there is plenty to talk about, and we’re excited to bring this new show to you!

Be sure to tune in at theonering.net/live on Sunday, November 10th, at 3PM PST and join in the fun!

Warner provides information on ‘Hobbit: AUえーゆーJ’ Extended Edition, targets Dec. 1st for Target

Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition

“Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Extended Edition

Warner Bros. has responded to TheOneRing.net’s request for further information about “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Extended Edition after fans expressed confusion and reported the sets were difficult to find.

TORn’s news leader Demosthenes posted this article about the availability of  on DVD and Blu-ray to highlight the frustrations fans were bombarding TheOneRing.net with. Warner provided the following information for us to pass on to consumers:

“We are thrilled at the fan reaction to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition. We’ve been made aware that certain retail outlets are sold out, and we are working as quickly as possible to replenish stock so fans can get their copies on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD. We understand that there is some confusion regarding what product is available at each retailer and would like to provide clarification.

There are three products currently available at retailers nationwide:
* 5-disc Blu-ray 3D + Digital HD UltraViolet
* 3-disc Blu-ray + Digital HD UltraViolet
* 5-disc DVD + Digital UltraViolet

Please note that Target will have the Blu-ray and DVD available on December 1st.

In addition to the national product, several retailers have unique product offerings as follows:

Amazon.com
* 3-disc Blu-ray + Digital HD UltraViolet with Bilbo/Gollum Statue
* 5-disc Blu-ray 3D + Digital HD UltraViolet with Bilbo/Gollum Statue

Wal-Mart
* 2-disc DVD including Extended Edition Feature Film and Special Features “The Company of Thorin,” and “Durin’s Folk: Creating the Dwarves”

Best Buy
* 4-disc Blu-ray 3D Steelbook:
- Disc 1: Blu-ray 3D Extended Edition Feature Part
- Disc 2: Blu-ray 3D Extended Edition Feature Part 1
- Disc 3: The Appendices Part 7
- Disc 4: The Appendices Part”

Editorializing a bit: The Wal-Mart 2-disc DVD probably isn’t meant for TORn readers but it is a real pity that casual buyers will fork out money for that edition and never realize that for a relatively small amount more, a treasure trove of beyond-industry-standard content awaits. (A complete review coming soon.) The home video market isn’t what it used to be, but this is a landmark title that consumers I know, including even casual fans, expect to be of the same standard as the history making LOTR EE versions.  However it may serve some audiences perfectly and it may have been a way to manufacture and ship the DVDs early to impulse buyers.

By not flooding stores by Black Friday in the U.S., (an enormous retail day immediately following U.S. Thanksgiving) sales will be less than they could have been. On the other hand, many fans have echoed the same thought through social media and in our in boxes: If it takes longer to release the best possible version of film and extras, it is worth the wait. We will of course provide further information as it becomes available.

Check the gallery below to see the product specifics.
