Miley Cyrus stole the show last night at the MTV Europe Music Awards, where she opened the telecast in Amsterdam by twerking onstage with a dwarf while performing "We Can't Stop," and closed it by sparking up what looked like a joint when she accepted the Best Video award for "Wrecking Ball."

"I couldn't fit this award in my bag, but I did find this," Cyrus said, rooting around in her Chanel purse and pulling out something resembling a spliff. While not legal in Amsterdam, marijuana users can't be prosecuted for possessing small amounts.

At the start of the show, Cyrus performed in a skin-tight silver outfit, grinding in the direction of a little person dressed in what CNN described as a "black latex catsuit." Although Robin Thicke was also there, singing "Blurred Lines," he and Cyrus didn't reprise their controversial performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in August.

Cyrus, who also performed "Wrecking Ball," wasn't the only American performer who won at the EMAs: Katy Perry took home the award for Best Female Artist (she also performed new song "Unconditional," from her Prism album), and Bruno Mars won Best Song for "Locked Out of Heaven." Eminem also performed "Rap God" and won twice: Best Hip-Hop Artist and the Global Icon award, which he accepted from Will Ferrell, who was in character as Anchorman star Ron Burgundy.

The rapper last week released The Marshall Mathers LP 2, his first album since Recovery in 2010.

Other winners included One Direction for Best Pop Artist, Justin Bieber for Best Male Artist, Beyoncé for Best Live Artist, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for Best New Artist, Green Day for Best Rock Artist and Avicii for Best Electronic Artist.
