"Black Tongue," the second video that Rolling Stone is premiering from Mastodon's Live in Brixton release, opens with a massive, twisting riff that seems to keep going lower and lower. Bassist Troy Sanders takes the vocals on this one, spitting out epic metal poetry like "I burned out my eyes / I cut off my tongue / I sealed them with all of the silver / and now I have none!" Then, suddenly, the song snaps into a quicker tempo, gaining an almost baroque interplay between the dual guitars and bass, before collapsing back down into that crushing riff.
Where Did Mastodon's The Hunter Rank Among Our 50 Best Albums of 2011?
The set, which is being released in audio and video formats on December 10th (and is available for pre-order here), was recorded at the last stop of the band's world tour supporting their fifth album, The Hunter. In addition to featuring almost every track off The Hunter, the band picks hits and fan favorites from across their career for an energetic 90-minute set. Currently, Mastodon are working on their next album. In the meantime, Rolling Stone will premiere a third video from the set on December 9th.
