Chris Pine managed to play a convincingly confident Captain Kirk, somehow managing to preserve William Shatner's strut while also adding a comedically sharp self-awareness.  Having accomplished the major feat of reinvigorating James Tiberius Kirk in Star Trek, Pine is at the center of a new reboot for Paramount Pictures.

At the end of this year, we'll see Pine's take on the title character in Jack Ryan, but right now, we've got a pair of pictures from the film showing off Pine, as well as Kevin Costner.

This week kicked off with a reminder that despite his reputation, Richard B. Riddick is, in fact, a sensitive soul who loves the rain

Now, the week ends with another image from this year's Riddick, but if the earlier picture showed the Vin Diesel character's softer side, then this one reminds audiences that Riddick is also a dangerous sociopath.

IAR Mixing Stage Visit: 'Olympus Has Fallen'

Tuesday, 22 January 2013 18:40

Ever since John McClane first uttered the words “Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker” in Die Hard almost twenty-five years ago, Hollywood has been copying the extraordinary success of that film. In fact, the groundbreaking movie actually created its own sub-category of action film that has been repeated many times and affectionately referred to as “Die Hard on a plane,” as in the case of Passenger 57, or “Die Hard on a boat,” as in the case of Under Siege, or even “Die Hard in a hockey rink,” as in the case of Sudden Impact. Actually, I once heard a story about a studio executive that pitched an idea to a writer and said, “Its Die Hard in a building!” The writer replied, “Hasn’t that been done before?” To which the executive quickly answered, “Yeah, but only in the first movie!”

Well, now audience can get ready for a new twist on the “Die Hard in a …” concept, “Die Hard in the White House.” In fact, there are actually two “Die Hard in the White House” films coming out in 2013, believe it or not. However, it is not unusual to see Hollywood release two similar high-concept films at the same time. Remember when asteroid movies (Deep Impact, Armageddon) were all the rage? And don’t forget that there was two films featuring the 16th President (Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) released last year. So it should be no surprise that Training Day director Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen, which opens in theaters on March 22nd and features Gerard Butler as a Secret Service agent saving Aaron Eckhart’s President from terrorists, is being released just a few months ahead of Independence Day director Roland Emmerich’s White House Down, which similarly finds Channing Tatums Secret Service agent trying to save Jamie Foxx’s President from terrorists.

Last week, I had the pleasure of being invited to the Olympus Has Fallen mixing stage, along with a select group of journalists, to see the new trailer for the film (which was released online yesterday), as well as three unfinished scenes, and a chance to speak with director Antoine Fuqua about his new movie. As anyone who has had a chance to see the trailer can tell you, it looks extremely cool and I was personally very impressed with all the footage that I saw.

He may be an interstellar mass murderer whose eyes were polished to give him night vision during years in an underground prison, but Richard B. Riddick is also a sensitive soul.  Beneath those slabs of muscle and that black tank top beats the soul of a poet, the sort of guy who likes to sit in the rain and contemplate every drop.

A new still from the upcoming sequel Riddick proves it, as the title character makes a silhouette on a rainy night and ponders some pretty lights.

Taylor Hackford is so much more than just “Mr. Helen Mirren!”

In addition to being the current President of the Director’s Guild of America, Hackford is also an acclaimed director in his own right with such popular films to his credit as An Officer and a Gentleman, Against All Odds, White Nights, Dolores Claiborne, The Devil’s Advocate, Proof of Life, Ray, and the Chuck Berry documentary Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll, as well as producing the Academy Award-winning documentary When We Were Kings, which tells the story of Muhammad Ali and George Foreman’s “Rumble in the Jungle” heavyweight championship fight.

Hackford’s latest film Parker, which opens in theaters on January 25th, is based on author Donald Westlake’s popular crime novels (written under the name Richard Stark) and features international action star Jason Statham (The Expendables 2) and actress/recording artist Jennifer Lopez (Out of Sight). Westlake’s novels have been adapted into films before, such as the Lee Marvin classic Point Blank, and the surprisingly good Mel Gibson vehicle Payback. But Parker, which is adapted from "Flashfire," the 19th Westlake novel, marks the first time a film has been granted the rights to use the lead character’s actual name.

Parker tells the story of a thief (Statham) with a unique code of professional ethics who is double-crossed by his crew and left for dead. Assuming a new disguise and forming an unlikely alliance with a woman (Lopez) on the inside, he looks to hijack the score of the crew’s latest heist. In addition to Statham and Lopez, the film boasts a terrific cast that includes Michael Chiklis (Fantastic Four), Wendell Pierce (Horrible Bosses), Clifton Collins Jr. (Star Trek), Bobby Cannavale (Win Win), Nick Nolte (Gangster Squad), and Tony Award-winner Patti LuPone.

I recently had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with filmmaker Taylor Hackford to talk about Parker, as well as his overall career. The esteemed director discussed his latest film, obtaining the rights to use the name Parker, his admiration for Donald Westlake’s books, casting Jason Statham in the lead, helming his first action film, directing Statham in a genre that the actor is an expert in, working with “Jenny from the Block,” possibly returning to documentary filmmaking, When We Were Kings, Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll, the great Muhammad Ali, and “the diabolical” Chuck Berry

IAR's Managing Editor Jami Philbrick recently had a chance to sit down with Luke Goss to talk about his work on Death Race 3: Inferno. The popular action star discussed his new film, how his character has changed since the last movie, developing the relationship between Frankenstein and Katrina, working with Danny Trejo and Ving Rhames, the addition of Dougray Scott as the villain, doing his own driving stunts, and which cut of the film he likes better - the rated or unrated version.

New 'Oblivion' Image: Run, Tom Cruise, Run

Friday, 18 January 2013 10:06

Tom Cruise is our foremost cinematic runner.  His determined sprint just can't be matched in determination, focus, and clench-jawed intensity.  Rarely do we see a Cruise movie in which his character does not run like a bat out of hell at least once.

A new official image from Oblivion makes it absolutely clear that Joseph Kosinski's sophomore feature won't be an exception.
