Like its better-known sibling Comic-Con, WonderCon is ostensibly a comic book convention, but has grown to encompass so much more than the adventures of spandex-wearing superheroes. Films that aren't based on comics and don't involve giant monsters fighting, for example, are showcased in Anaheim.
One such film at this year's con is The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, a fantasy-drama based on the young adult novel by Cassanda Clare. As part of the Sony Picture presentation on Saturday, WonderCon's arena hosted a panel presentation promoting The Mortal Instruments, with Clare in attendance alongside stars Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Kevin Zegers.
Not only did the panel show off a new trailer for attendees, but a pair of new character posters bring home the fun for fans unable to make it Southern California this weekend.
Opening in theaters on April 19th is visionary director Joseph Kosinski’s highly anticipated follow up film to Tron: Legacy entitled Oblivion. The movie stars a fantastic cast of actors that includes Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol), Olga Kurylenko (Seven Psychopaths), Zoe Bell (Django Unchained), Nikolaj Costar-Waldau (Mama), and Academy Award-winners Morgan Freeman (Olympus Has Fallen), and Melissa Leo (Olympus Has Fallen). The film is loosely based on Kosinski’s own Radical Comics graphic novel, which was never published.
Oblivion takes place in the year 2073, and revolves around a former Marine commander named Jack Harper (Cruise) who is one of the last few repairman stationed on Earth, which was destroyed by an alien invasion sixty-years earlier. As part of a massive operation to extract the planet’s remaining vital resources, he lives in an airborne space station floating thousands of meters above the Earth. With his mission nearly complete, Jack’s world changes when he rescues a female stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a series of events that force Jack to question everything he knows about the war and its aftermath. In addition, after being captured by an insurgency group led by Malcolm Beach (Freeman), Jack is learns that the people he works for have not been telling him the truth about what happened to his planet.
Co-writer and director Joseph Kosinski attended WonderCon 2013 in Anaheim, California on Saturday to speak with press about Oblivion. I had a chance to sit down with the acclaimed filmmaker, along with a select group of journalists, to discuss his upcoming science fiction film, the unpublished graphic novel that helped developed the movie, working with Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman, deleted scenes, and plans for a sequel, as well as the current status of the Untitled Tron: Legacy Sequel.
It's a safe bet that the Bard never anticipated a world in which the writer-director behind the biggest superhero movie of all time would be promoting an adaptation of one of his plays at an annual comic book convention in Anaheim.

Hail to the king, baby!
With Evil Dead, a remake to the groundbreaking horror classic, opening on April 5th, rumors about the future of the franchise have been circulating for several weeks now. At the new film’s recent SXSW premiere, director Fede Alvarez announced that a sequel to his remake was in the works. While the original trilogy’s director Sam Raimi admitted during his press tour for Oz the Great and Powerful, that he was planning on writing a forth installment of the franchise with his brother Ivan. At first, the proposed film was considered to be entitled Evil Dead 4, but was later confirmed to actually be Army of Darkness 2, a direct sequel to the final film in the original series.
Today, at WonderCon 2013 during a panel presentation for Evil Dead, Alvarez and producer/original series star Bruce Campbell announced that their ultimate plan would be for Alvarez’s Evil Dead 2 and Raimi’s Army of Darkness 2 to be followed by a seventh movie that merges the narratives of both films and include the characters of Ash (Campbell) and Mia (Jane Levy). Campbell was even quoted as saying, “I think seven is a nice number.”
However, when I had a chance to speak with actor/producer Bruce Campbell right before the panel, he seemed less enthused with the possibilities of a sequel to Army of Darkness and reprising his legendary role as Ash. The following is my conversation with Campbell about the proposed sequel, why he is so skeptical, and how he feels about returning to play his beloved character. I also had a chance to ask him about proposed sequels to two of his other popular films, Bruce vs. Frankenstein, which is a follow up to ‘2007s My Name is Bruce. As well as Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, a sequel to ‘2002s Bubba Ho-tep, a movie that up until this point the actor has stated he had no interest in making.
