IAR DVD Preview: 'As I Lay Dying'

Monday, 04 November 2013 10:08

It's hard to believe, but playing the cornrowed, hideously-grilled nightmare known simply as "Alien" isn't the most audacious thing James Franco has done recently.

The honor of supreme Franco-based audacity in 2013 undoubtedly rests with As I Lay Dying, an adaptation of the classic novel by William Faulkner.  It's not simply that the actor stars in the ambitious endeavor, but that he both directs and writes, providing a faithful take on one of the finest American novels of the twentieth century.

The fruit of his labors arrives on DVD this Tuesday, November 5th.

Danny Trejo is one of the most recognizable actors in Hollywood … he is also one of the busiest!

Trejo’s life would make a great movie itself. After spending time in prison and becoming the San Quentin lightweight and welterweight boxing champion, he landed a small role in Runaway Train. Since then he has appeared in over 200 movie including Desperado, From Dusk till Dawn, Heat, Con Air, Reindeer Games, Spy Kids, xXx, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and Predators. But he is best known for his role as Machete Cortez in Grindhouse, Machete, and most recently Machete Kills. In fact, the actor is so busy that he has over 20 films in various stages of production including the highly awaited upcoming sequel Muppets Most Wanted. But first, the actor can be seen along side another Hollywood great – Mickey Rourke, in the new film Dead in Tombstone, which will be available on Blu-ray and DVD beginning October 22nd.

The new Western was directed by Roel Reine (Death Race 2) and tells the story of a gang of outlaws that overrun a small mining town and then murder their own leader Guerrero (Trejo) in a cold-blooded power grab. Sentenced to eternity in hell Guerrero finds himself confronted by Satan (Rourke), offering a daring proposition: deliver the six souls of his former gang and he will escape damnation. With time running out, he sets out on a brutal rampage to avenge his own death at the hands of his gang, which are led by his half-brother Red Cavanaugh (Anthony Michael Hall).

I recently had the absolute pleasure of speaking with the great Danny Trejo about Dead in Tombstone, as well as Muppets Most Wanted. The iconic actor discussed his new movie, returning to the Western genre, his favorite Western films, reuniting with his Animal Factory co-star Mickey Rourke, how Trejo approaches playing his characters, the personal tragedy he experienced on the set of Muppets Most Wanted, why Ray Liotta is “the best friend to have in a crisis,” and that “damn little frog!”

Director Shawn Levy is one of the most successful filmmakers in Hollywood with his movies having grossed over $2 billion at the worldwide box office.

He first gained attention for the romantic comedy Just Married, and followed it up with the Steve Martin comedies Cheaper by the Dozen and The Pink Panther. But it was the box office smash Night at the Museum starring Ben Stiller that cemented him as one of Hollywood’s top directors. His hot streak would continue with the film’s sequel - Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian, as well as Date Night, and Real Steel. Levy will soon start production on Night at the Museum 3, and is attached to direct the James Cameron-produced 3D sci-fi remake of Fantastic Voyage, and an untitled Sesame Street movie. But first, his latest comedy The Internship, which stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, will be available on Blu-ray and DVD beginning October 22nd.

The Internship, which is based on a story by Vince Vaughn with a script by Vaughn and Jared Stern, revolves around two salesmen (Vaughn and Wilson) whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital age. They ultimately find their way into a coveted internship at Google, where they must compete with a group of young, tech-savvy geniuses for a shot at employment. In addition to Vaughn and Wilson, the film also stars Rose Byrne (X-Men: First Class), Max Minghella (The Social Network), Joanna Garcia (American Pie 2), Dylan O’Brian (TV’s Teen Wolf), Jessica Szohr (Tower Heist), Josh Gad (21) and John Goodman (The Artist).

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Shawn Levy about his work on The Internship. The talented filmmaker discussed his latest movie, developing the idea with Vince Vaughn, Vaughn and Wilson’s on screen chemistry, improvisation, getting Google to sign off on the project, and the young actors that he cast in the film.

Listen, if you're watching Pacific Rim on a phone, tablet, laptop, or any other screen that isn't ostentatiously huge, then you're missing out.  Pacific Rim does big better than just about any recent blockbuster, and the only way to watch Guillermo del Toro's monster mash is on Blu-ray.

Luckily for you, Pacific Rim hits high definition this week, arriving on Blu-ray Combo Pack, 3D Blu-ray, and even a Limited Collector's Edition Blu-ray set offering both formats.

Unarguably, Clark Duke is one of the funniest young comedic actors working in Hollywood today!

He first gained attention on the small screen for his work on Greek, and the Internet series Clark and Michael co-starring Michael Cera, but it was probably his role on The Office that he is best known for. He has also appeared in several successful films including Superbad, Sex Drive, Kick-Ass, Hot Tub Time Machine, Identity Thief, and Kick-Ass 2, as well as recently finishing work on another highly awaited sequel - Hot Tub Time Machine 2. Earlier this year, Duke’s first performance in an animated movie was released with the box office hit The Croods, which will be available on Blu-ray and DVD beginning October 1st.

The film was produced by DreamWorks Animation and directed by Kirk De Micco (Space Chimps) and Chris Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon). The Croods follows a caveman’s (Nicolas Cage) family as they trek through an unfamiliar fantastical world with the help of an inventive young boy (Ryan Reynolds), after their cave is destroyed. Duke plays the family’s youngest son Thunk, and in addition to Cage and Reynolds, the film also stars Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man), Oscar-nominee Catherine Keener (A Late Quartet), and Oscar-winner Cloris Leachman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). The Croods did so well during its theatrical release that a planned sequel has already been announced.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Clark Duke about his work on The Croods, as well as its upcoming sequel, and Hot Tub Time Machine 2. The comedic actor discussed The Croods, making his first animated film, creating his character’s voice, recording alone, working with directors Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders, never actually meeting Ryan Reynolds, the movie’s premise, possibly returning for the planned sequel, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, when he finished filming, Adam Scott’s addition to the project, and if the original film’s star John Cusack will actually appear in the sequel.
