Wine awards and competitions have been part of the wine world for almost two centuries. The earliest public wine judging took place at agricultural shows, where local vignerons would pitch their wines against those of their neighbors. Aside from any ribbons or medals awarded on the day, there was the enduring reward of increased recognition and reputation, and ultimately revenue.
Little has changed since those early days, although the scale has now increased to global proportions. Wine shows are now taking place throughout the year, and all over the world. They are attracting more wines, judges, and attention with each year that passes, and their influence increases in step. With more wines available than ever before, the importance of wine awards has never been greater.
