Andre is a red wine grape variety reported to have been developed in the early 1960s in Moravia, in the grapegrowing regions of the Czech Republic. It is derived from a crossing of Lemberger and Saint-Laurent. Andre produces a garnet-red wine with soft tannins.
In the Czech Republic there are approximately 700 acres (300ha) planted, with a very small amount in Saale-Unstrut in the north of Germany. The late-ripening nature of these grapes, when grown in cooler climates, means that they require prime vineyard locations to achieve full maturity and keep the acid from becoming overwhelming.
