There are two styles of address for members of the Jewish Synagogue: formal and social. In most circumstances the social form of address is used - that is a polite but slightly less deferential style of approach than the very rigid form that was followed in the last century. The formal styles of address may be found in the published edition of Debrett's Correct Form.

There are over 350 synagogues in the United Kingdom, and it is estimated that 70% of the country's Jews are affiliated to a synagogue.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews, which was founded in 1760, is the main representative body of British Jewry. It receives deputies elected by individual synagogues, confederations of synagogues and other organisations within the Jewish community.

The Chief Rabbi is the spiritual head of the United Synagogue, the largest synagogue body in the UK, and therefore the Chief Rabbi of the mainstream British orthodox synagogues, receiving widespread recognition from the majority of UK Jews.
