Taking its name from the spring in what are now the Bishop's palace grounds, the present cathedral building was begun in 1180. This exquisite cathedral, along with the moated Bishop's Palace and Vicar's Close (said to be the oldest planned street in Europe) dominates the lovely city of Wells, near Glastonbury in Somerset.
The famous Wells clock was probably in place by 1390. It is unique its original medieval face depicts a pre-Copernican universe with the earth at its centre. When the quarter strikes, jousting knights rush round above the clock and the Quarter Jack bangs the quarter hours with his heels.
Don't miss the breathtaking west façade, containing over 300 original medieval statues, the 14th-century stained glass, and the octagonal Chapter with its beautiful fan vaulting.
This beautiful setting guarantees an uplifting start to the Christmas season. The carol service takes place from 6-7.30pm.
