Bishop of London

How to Address the Bishop of London

He is always a Privy Counsellor and is addressed accordingly as The Rt Rev and Rt Hon.

The recommended (social) style of address is as follows:

Beginning of letter Dear Bishop/Dear Lord Bishop
End of letter Yours sincerely
Envelope The Rt Rev and Rt Hon the Lord Bishop of London
Verbal address Bishop (or My Lord Bishop)
Invitation The Bishop of London
Joint invitation* The Bishop of London and Mrs Chartres
Description in conversation The Bishop of London
List of Directors or Patrons The Bishop of London
Place card The Bishop of London
Signature + Richard Londin

*Note: Traditionally, invitations to a married couple, when sent to their home address, are addressed to the wife alone, with both names being inscribed on the invitation card. It has become increasingly acceptable, however, to address the envelope with both names.

How to Address a Retired Bishop of London

When the Bishop of London retires he is addressed as any other retired diocesan bishop, except that as the Bishop of London is usually also a Privy Counsellor he retains the designation 'The Rt Hon', e.g. (The Rt Hon and Rt Rev John Smith).
