Canterbury Cathedral hosts two carol services on consecutive days. On 23 December (3-4pm) no tickets are required. The service on Christmas Eve (also 3-5pm) is for ticket-holders only and tickets need to be booked in advance.*
One of the most visited places in the country, a World Heritage Site, Canterbury Cathedral is symbolic of the worldwide Anglican communion. It is most famously associated with the murder, in 1179, of the 'meddlesome priest' Archbishop Thomas Becket.
Canterbury has been a place of worship since the Roman occupation of Britain, and is the oldest church in England still in use. In 1077 the old Saxon church rebuilt as a Norman Church, and fragments of the Norman building remain. The nave was rebuilt in the Perpendicular style of English Gothic (1390-1410), and the original Norman north-west tower was demolished in the late 18th century and replaced with a matching south-west Perpendicular style tower.
