Attending a Drinks Party

Drinking champagne at a drinks party

If you are a guest, you should always respond to an invitation punctually and if you accept, attend. Arrive in good time but avoid being early; your host may be thrown off course by having to entertain whilst making last-minute preparations.

However stressful your day has been, leave any anxiety at the door. You are here to enjoy yourself and to help others do the same. A drink will help you unwind, but be careful not to overindulge. This also applies to food; avoid stationing yourself by the buffet all evening, and never pursue a tray of canapés through a crowded room.

When engaged in one-on-one conversation, give the other person your full attention and be as lively and stimulating as you can. Never look over his or her shoulder for an escape route or a better offer. It is worth having one or two credible techniques up your sleeve to detach yourself from a conversation that is going nowhere.

Always thank your host warmly and follow up with a note of thanks.
