Mayor of London

In 1998 London voted in favour of the formation of the Greater London Authority. The first elections to the GLA took place in 2000, including a directly elected Mayor (the Mayor of London), and a separately elected assembly (the London Assembly).

No courtesy title or style has been ascribed to the office of Mayor of London, which may arise from the position being an executive one, directly elected by constituents across the whole of Greater London.

How to Address the Mayor of London

The recommended social form of address is as follows:

Beginning of letter Dear Mr Johnson
End of letter Yours sincerely
Envelope Boris Johnson, Esq, Mayor of London

Note: The Mayor of London should not be confused with the Lord Mayor?of the City of London. For the latter see Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress.

For precedence and protocol at events that are staged in the City of Westminster, contact the Private Secretary to the Lord Mayor of Westminster who liaises between the offices of the Lord Mayor, the Lord-Lieutenant and the Mayor of London.
