Rabbi Doctors

A Rabbi Doctor is simply a person who has both a Rabbinic ordination and a University doctorate (PhD).

How to Address a Rabbi Doctor

Rabbi Doctors are addressed and referred to in speech as, for example, Dr Cohen.

The recommended (social) style of address is as follows:

Beginning of letter Dear Dr Cohen
End of letter Yours sincerely
Envelope The Rev Rabbi Dr Joseph Cohen
Invitation Dr Joseph Cohen
Joint invitation* Dr Joseph and Mrs Cohen
Description in conversation Dr Cohen
List of Directors or Patrons The Rev Rabbi Dr Joseph Cohen

*Note: Traditionally, invitations to a married couple, when sent to their home address, are addressed to the wife alone, with both names being inscribed on the invitation card. It has become increasingly acceptable, however, to address the envelope with both names.
