Leeds Castle Bonfire Night

05.11.14
Maidstone, Kent

This picture-book castle, set on two islands in the River Len deep in the Kentish countryside, dates to the early 12th century. It was held by six medieval queens, but in Tudor times was granted to a courtier for his services, and remained in private hands.

The castle is an accretion of 900 years of history - encompassing a medieval gatehouse, a Tudor tower and 19th-century country house. The last private owner, Lady Baillie, filled the castle with an eclectic collection of arts and antiques. The castle is surrounded by 500 acres of gardens, parkland, woods and a golf course - one of the highlights is a maze with 2,400 yew trees.

Every November, this is the spectacular setting for a pyrotechnic extravaganza, which takes place on the Cedar Lawn. Entertainment is also on offer throughout the afternoon.
