Durham Cathedral Carols

24.12.14
Durham Cathedral

Durham Cathedral forms part of a World Heritage Site with Durham Castle.

This impressive Norman cathedral sits in grandeur upon a hill overlooking the city, and is regarded by many as the greatest Norman building in England.

Begun in 1093, and completed within 40 years, it is the only cathedral in England that retains almost all of its Norman craftsmanship. It was built as a shrine to Saint Cuthbert, which pilgrims visited from all over the north of England.

Built on a peninsula created by a loop in the River Wear, the cathedral towers over a rugged gorge, while the northern side of the cathedral faces on to Palace Green.

This is a spectacular setting for a seasonal service. Starting at 3pm on Christmas eve, it is a magical start to the Christmas season.
