December 2014Lincoln Cathedral Carols
An atmospheric candlelit carol concert kicks off the Christmas season at Lincoln (if you miss this you can always go to the Christmas Eve carol service at 4pm).
Lincoln is a magnificent cathedral which towers above the flat plains of Lincolnshire, visible for miles around.
The earliest part of the cathedral is the Romanesque West Front, which dates to 1072, Most of the cathedral, however is 13th century, when it was rebuilt in the Gothic style.
It is well endowed with a wonderful carved screen, 14th-century misericords anad frescoes by Bloomsbury's Duncan Grant.
Lincoln is a compact, and atmospheric cathedral city, which is a pleasure to explore on foot. Much of its history dates back to Roman times, and the city boasts a very fine medieval Bailgate area - a fascinating labyrinth of narrow, cobbled medieval streets. The city is dominated by the twin major landmarks of the cathedral and the castle.
