Justice of the Peace

Justices of the Peace are appointed by the Crown for every metropolitan and non-metropolitan county.

While of the Bench he or she is addressed as 'Your Worship' and described as 'His or Her Worship' in certain cities, eg Chester and York. Otherwise he or she is addressed as  an esquire or female equivalent. It is therefore best to check with the relevant City authorities.

He or she may use the letters JP after the name, but this is not obligatory.  The letters JP precede DL as the former is a Crown appointment and the latter a Lord Lieutenant's appointment.

A Justice of the Peace who has been transferred to the Supplementary List may still have the letters JP placed after his or her name.
