BREEDING BETTER ASEEL

by Nadeem Ullah "Big Leo"

The impulse to create which is so urgent an attribute of the human spirit can and does find its release in the breeding of Aseels. In his ability to ordain the existence of a new organism and to order what it shall be like, the breeder realize a power that is but little short godlike.
Bringing together the germ plasm of two Aseels from which to mold a third to his living flesh.Any critical verdict about his creature as a work of art must rest upon whether or not the breeder has employed the right materials the breeders' ideal Aseel of any specific breed.
For the fine Aseel may well be a work of art. However,if the Aseel be merely the result of the unplanned, chance union of the parental.
Genetics , the word art and artistry can hardly be applied to its production. The person who passes as breeder of such a one is not a breeder at all but merely the possessor of the dam at the time fo her copulation with the sire.
The earlier successful breeders had their ideals. They knew what they wanted. And many of their ideals were more practical and serviceable than some that we now entertain.
They also had the materials with which to realize their ideals, but they did not know how to use them.
To assert that the breeding of fine Aseels is an art does not imply that it is not also a science.Art and science are by no means mutually exclusive. In this art, as in all othes, science is its handmind.Science is the means employed to attain the conceived ideal, whereas the breeders' are lies in the conception of the ideal and in the skillful employment of the means to attain it.
For breeding in Aseel, both cock and hen must be matured.Cock aged 4 years adn hen's 3 years. It is very suitable for Aseel's breeding.
But here a custom has been developed that cock's age 3 years and hen's 2 years for breeding. If you selection a muture cock for breeding, it is very nice job.

1-For fruitful breeding superlative hen selection for such cock which cock win a game.A large height Aseel can usually gaming till four years and medium size Aseel can gaming till 6 years and after that such Aseel can be become use as a breeding for several years. But some cock may be use for breeding till 15-20 years. For breeding , our first priority is that make a pair of mature cock and hen .If you want chicken then you remember that cock and hen not same pattern means not same qualities such as if cock broad and bony(hard) then hen also bony but not broad (but remember hen would have same standard like Aseel cock)if that pair is bony and broad then their chickens will be useless (good form nothing) they can't game very well.

2-Both cock and hen have same pattern of game.It is not good that cock gaming style from hit on the head and hen's gaming style strike on body.(Remember our or western gaming style are different because our good gaming target on face like boxing and there western gaming pattern are whole body like freestyle wrestling)otherwise chick have hot stable any style of gaming and game will become bad.

3-Your priority that make a pair which chick stable their game same and endurance. If then such as that they alway reach their striking area although they reach till their finish.

4-Make such a pair , which have been checked by their gaming style ,health, condition, but only beauty is not good otherwise they can't amuse theirself for breeding,it is better that type of Aseel which lose the game but not lose his courage.

Crossing

By Tan Bark.

If a man lives long enough the time will eventually come when he will have to cross his inbred fowl.Fowl cannot be raised under such ideal conditions, and no man is so infallible that he can inbreed fowl indefinitely and produce practical pit cocks.Generally speaking most of us expect to introduce fresh blood every 15 or 20 years.

It amuses me to have men quarrel about the purity of fowl claimed to have been inbred for 60 or 70 years, and then advertise shake cocks for sale of these same strains.I do not believe that nature suspends her laws in favour of a few chosen individuals, and it is amusing or disgusting,as you choose to view it,to see some huckster blossom forth advertising some grand old strain, that has been extinct for a quarter of a century.

Every case of this kind that has ever come under my personal observation i know to be hocum pure and simple.I have letters from some of these self-styled perpetuators written when they were scurrying around hunting all sorts of crosses. They would make a much a better hit with me,if instead of advertising Whitehorses,or Warhackles, bred from trio arriving from John Gilkerson or George Stone in1858 ,they would advertise "fowl carrying large proportion of the blood of such and such a strain and closely resembling them in appearance and pit qualites. They contain only the following additional crosses, etc." Then i would have some confidence in what i was getting and feel that i was dealing with an honest man.If the pure bred fowl did exist which they don't,they would be fit only for museums and not for the pit.

So when the time does come for crossing, you will have had sufficient experience to know what men breed fowl that you would not be afraid to try.No man can foresee the results of a cross, it is entirely a gamble. I have known two excellent, inbred strains to be crossed and result in chickens that couldn't whip a canary bird. It happens more often than not that a cross is entirely different from what might be expected. All you can do is make a guess and hope for the best and if it fails try again.

For crossing select a strain that has been pure bred for a number of years, as much like yours in style of fighting and characteristics as possible. Style and characteristics of the proposed cross are much more important than color. Color in itself cuts no figure, but you will probably be more apt to find fowl like you own in the same color. Most of the light reds in this country are descended from and carry more or less of the blood of the old Derbys and allied families and fight more or less alike. As a general proposition the dark reds are rushing, body cutting fighters.

The Doms all descend from the Minton and Oneil blood and all that i ever saw were shufflers. The Pyles are descendants of Genet and Newbold blood and are sparring cocks expect of course Pyles which are merely crosses of White Dominics.

So other things being equal, you are more likely to find what you want in strains colored like your own.Get the best individual of the strain obtainable. It is usually more satisfactory to get a cock, because you can select the kind you have seen in battle, that suits you and it is a very rare thing that you can buy a tested hen .Breed the new cock to the very best hens that you own. When old enough test some of the stags for gameness. If they are going to be bad,the sooner you know it the better. If satisfactory so far, breed the new cock to his daughters and one of his sons back over the hens. Then the next winter your original cross of your old stock so that you may compare them.

Unless the cross is approximately as good as your old family, you should go no further with them,as by so doing you will be going downhill.

It is very likely that you may be fooled by the goodness of the first cross. Sometimes a cross between two inbred strains will temporarily niche and produce chickens better than either side of the house, the stream runs higher than the source, as it were and yet the niche will not breed on when put back to either ingredient strain. That is the first cross or half bloods may be the only mistress of the two bloods that is any good. So don't pat yourself on the back until you have fought th cocks of 3/4th your own blood and 1/4th of the new blood.

If they can fight as well as your own chickens you are on the right track. As i have said before, if your hens are intensely game, their sons out of short bred cock may act game,so you will not be sure of the deep gameness of your cross until you have tested out cocks with new blood on their dam's side. So likewise test out some of the sons of the new cock over his daughters. If they stand the test your cross is game at any rate.

After you have bred the new blood down to 1/8, 1/16,or 1/32 you have the advantage of the cross and haver chickens just like and as good as your own family with all the characteristics you have spent in developing your fowl.

If the cross is real success, put aside a few of the hens carrying 3/4 of the new blood. When they are seven or eight years old you can go back for new blood of the same blood and can do away with all the guess work and uncertaninties of trying out an entirely new mixture.

When you have made a cross be man enough to admit it .Don't join the band of phoney old dodos who claim that nature makes special dispensation on their and who breed game chickens just as Noah had them in the Ark.

Conditioning

By Shelby Harrington

I am asked all the time how do you get your birds in such good condition? There is no secret to having a bird in condition. It all starts in the incubator. When the chicks hatch make sure you have a roomy brooder with adequate heat.

So many times I see a 100-watt bulb to brood 25 to 30 chicks. If those chicks are all under the light in a huddle, they your brooder is not warm enough. I have not used a brooder thermometer since 1973.

Chicks must have clean water every day and fresh feed. Plenty of good dry clean litter is a must. One of the most frequent mistakes that I see is ventilation. You do not want your brooder airtight. If your brooder is to tight then you will get condensation therefore causing respiratory problems. I find that a brooder house that opens into a range work best for me.

When the chicks get feathered and the weather is right I open the doors and let them range. Greens, dirt and sunlight can not be substituted. I change the litter when needed. I don’t do it once a month. I change it immediately if it gets wet. If not I don’t worry if birds on range. Unless you have a dirt such as red clay birds stay White if conditions are favorable to them. I know some breeders never let their birds hit the ground. That’s great if it works for them, I have not had good luck with this method, so do what works for you.

As the birds mature separate the males and females when the male becomes active. Cull birds several times during the growing season to give the good birds more space. Once the birds get there adult feather you want to give them even more room or put them in show coops. Again I like to let mine range free.

When its time for the first show, don’t just enter 5 birds because you want to. Go over your birds and if you only have 2 in perfect feather, then only show 2. Why show a bird with a missing primary. The chance for that bird to make best of breed or champion are very slim. You must give your birds a fair chance. Treat your birds like you would want to be treated.
