Gary Carter Appointed Chairman, Northern Europe and Shine 360°

20th Mar 2013

Shine Group today announced the appointment of Gary Carter to the newly created role of Chairman of Northern Europe and Shine 360° as of 1 June 2013. Most recently, Carter was Chief Operating Officer of FremantleMedia Group.

In the new role Carter will oversee the creative and operational functions of Shine Germany, and the Nordic regions’ Metronome group of production companies in Finland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Carter will additionally operate as a strategic sounding board to Shine Group’s off-air ancillary division Shine 360°. Reporting to Shine Group CEO, Alex Mahon, he will travel between all offices from a base in Amsterdam.

One of the international production business’ most respected executives, and closely personally identified with the emergence of the Reality genre, Carter was most recently Chief Operating Officer at FremantleMedia Group. At Fremantle, he was responsible for leading the group’s business strategy, oversaw the group’s central Creative Networks across all genres and platforms, founded the company’s central digital division, and managed its various European production operations.   Additionally, he was Chairman of the board of Ludia, Inc, the Canadian casual games company.

Prior to this, Carter served as Executive Director of Programme Affairs at Endemol International for five years, where he united the group’s intellectual property in one division, oversaw the international roll-out of Big Brother, and acquired production licenses in some 14 European territories of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire

Alex Mahon said: “Gary is one of the most admired and respected figures in television production and he is a brilliant addition to our international team of creative leaders. He combines a creative heart with superb relationships and always approaches ideas with a global perspective. Having worked with him, I know his qualities and huge experience will be invaluable to our Nordic and German companies and indeed to the Shine Group as a whole.”

Gary Carter said; “I’ve long held Shine in high regard for their approach and achievements. As an international group they remain forward-thinking and nimble, operating collectively at scale but with each company remaining distinctive, a strategy which is unique and essential in the current industry landscape.   I greatly look forward to concentrating on vibrant markets within Northern Europe like Germany, and to reviving a professional relationship with the Nordic region that began in the mid-90s with the world premiere of Survivor!, and continued with the subsequent launch of Big Brother by the Metronome group.”

South African-born Carter originally trained as an actor at the University of Cape Town, and worked in the national theatre before moving to London in 1985. During ten years as an agent he represented writers, producers, directors and independent production companies. After joining Planet 24 in the mid-90s, he ran their Los Angeles office and all the company’s international business, including the international launch of Survivor!.

The appointment follows recent executive Shine Group appointments that include Rich Ross CEO, Shine America, Tim Robinson as COO, Shine Group and the launch of Shine Latin America under Cristina Palacio.
