July 2014Buxton Festival
The 17-day-long Buxton Festival is one of Britain's biggest arts festivals. It draws around 35,000 people to the Peak District town each July to watch a number of rarely staged operas, from the baroque period to contemporary pieces, performed in English.
Past coups at the Buxton opera festival have included the UK premières of obscure works by Mozart, Rossini and Handel. A Literary Series runs in tandem with the opera programme, featuring talks by prominent novelists, biographers, political authors and others, and evenings see film screenings and various cultural events.
The festival will celebrate its 21st year in 2014. The programme includes many opera and music performances, including Dvořák’s The Jacobin, Rossini’s Otello, concerts by The Lawson Trio, Innovation Chamber Ensemble and the Schubert Ensemble. This year also sees free weekend events for visitors of all ages, including storytelling in the Magical Storytelling Yurt.
