National Fortification Alliances

Fighting Malnutrition through Sustainable National Level Partnerships

GAIN supports coalitions of governments, businesses, international organizations and civil society in countries. These National Fortification Alliances (NFAs) collaborate to strengthen policy, legislation and regulation around fortification.

In GAIN-funded projects, GAIN requires the NFA to have at least one representative from:

  • Government, e.g. Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture or Industry, Food Safety Agency, etc.
  • Private Sector, e.g. food/condiment companies, miller's associations, millers, baker's associations, bakeries, etc.
  • Civil Society, e.g. consumer groups, women's unions, NGOs
  • International Agencies, e.g. WHO, WFP
  • Development agencies, e.g. bilateral donors
  • Academia

The NFA provides strategic guidance for national fortification programs and acts as a governance body for GAIN supported projects. It guides the development and implementation of GAIN projects and ensures cohesion with other fortification and nutrition projects in the country. The alliance is committed to identifying sustainable market-based solutions to malnutrition that continue after project close out.

The NFA is assembled to accomplish the following tasks:

  • Facilitate communication among government, businesses and civil society regarding food and condiment fortification and related nutrition interventions and strategies.
  • Serve as a forum for open discussion of strategies related to alleviating vitamin and mineral deficiencies in the country.
  • Integrate the GAIN-supported fortification project into the national nutrition program.
  • Ensure transparency and participatory decision making.
  • Assist in mobilizing other resources to ensure sustainability subsequent to GAIN funding.
