two screen multiplayer was the thing i enjoyed most about the incredible Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing. I'm honestly shocked that they aren't getting it right. I love Mario Kart, but this news makes me a lot less excited :(

I always found the sfx really annoying in this. They're too shrill. I don't find any of them, especially the player shots and the enemy death explosions at all satisfying. Nor do they compliment the music. Personally I find this to be a very important aspect of shmups, even more so than in other games.

Sonic Lost World was one of my favorite games of last year! The production values fall short in a couple of places, but the game play is magnificent. "A crushing disappointment" it most certainly was not. What was crushingly disappointing was how many so called professional reviewers didn't bother to find out what most of the buttons do.

@andrea987 Interestingly the screen tearing sort of disappears after a while. The opening sequence is horrendous. Honestly, I've never seen anything like it. I'm not sure if screen ripping is a term, but it seemed to go well beyond screen tearing. Beenox should be ashamed.

But then, soon after getting into the game proper, the screen tearing all but disappears. I barely noticed it after the first 30min. If you can get it cheap, I wouldn't let the screen tearing stop you.

For a while I was downloading a lot of games from the eShop. This was mainly because Nintendo's distributors in South Africa are so useless its often impossible to find retail copies of even wildly successful games. Unfortunately the Rand to Pound exchange rate has stopped me from downloading anything for the moment.

Says a lot about the people attending GDC. I wen to the European one last year. It was amazing, but there was a huge percentage of attendees that were business people mainly interested in producing the next Candy Crush Saga and milking money from players rather than making a game. Lots of talks about how to monetize games etc. It got a bit depressing outside of the Indie section.

chiptoon commented on Sonic Lost World Sales Reached 640,000 in 2013:

I realise others seemed to disagree with me, but Lost World on Wii U was possible my favorite game of last year.

What hurts is that so many of the reviews didn't seem to be by people who had bothered to find out what all the little buttons on the controller do.

Amazon international now ships a lot of things to South Africa, but that's not helpful for gaming because of region locking. It would be amazing for Nintendo if Amazon UK would start shipping internationally, because then we could side step the unbelievably incompetent local distributor.

I'm sure South Africa is not the only country in this situation.

@lbs The thing about this glitch is that old CRT monitors largely cut it off. the Frames of the TVs covered the edge of the monitor, meaning that there were always lost pixels.

Now that its emulated on LCD screens we see all the mess. Nintendo should really look to what M2 did recently with the Sega classics and emulate them instead :)

EDIT: I see @gsmaciel got there first!

chiptoon commented on Tech Site The Verge Thinks The Wii U's Failure...:

indeed. Success in business is not about competition. Its about sustainability first and profit second.

Plus, I don't think Wii U is a bad idea. I would rather play games on Wii U than on any other system. The marketing went wrong. And its unlikely to ever have the widespread appeal that analysts feel all products need. But numbers are not the measure of true success.

Sadly it seems that Fire Emblem is no longer officially available in South Africa. I remember seeing a few copies earlier in the year, but I was too busy and delayed buying one. Been searching for a copy and eventually just mailed the local Nintendo distributor to find out. They sent me a link to a listing on a local auction site, where its being sold for nearly double retail price. Nintendo South Africa really are utterly useless.

what a surprising list. I've not actually played many of those. Gunstar Heroes is the only one I really expected to see. It would be even more incredible in 3D.

I always thought the Mega Drive version of ESWAT was vastly superior to the arcade, which I find pretty dull.

chiptoon commented on Sonic Lost World Gets Patched Up On Wii U:

Dammit - I just last week collected all the Chaos Emeralds. Those extra lives would have come in handy.

I don't understand the negativity around this game. Its my personal favorite of the year (although I've not played Mario yet). Its controls so well once you take the time to actually find out what all the buttons do. There are so many things in the game that seem impossible when you first encounter them, especially collecting some of the red rings. But everything is totally manageable once you figure out how.

Gotta disagree about the classic mode option. Its the best thing I've ever seen in emulation. It finally looks like it was designed to look. I love pixel art, but these games were never designed to look crisp and blocky. Classic mode is absolutely beautiful!

whether or not the micro-transactions are an in-game issue is irrelevant to me. I just can't pay full price for a game with micro -transactions. This is not the business model we are looking for.

I live in a house with noisy wooden floors and share walls with neighbors. I've always worried that playing Wii Fit will be a loud activity that will piss people off, but I've never tried it. Any thoughts? Is it all more balancey than jumpy?
