The largest elk herds in the United States are found in Western Colorado. Thousands of hunters come to Colorado every year to test their skills and hopefully bag the elusive "Wapiti". The area is also very popular with hunters who pursue antelope, mule deer, mountain lion and black bear. Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles are frequently seen in their towering nesting areas along the White River near Meeker.
Ranching, agriculture, forestry, oil and gas production, mining, and power generation provide a year-round economy throughout the service area.
